Did I need to play Starlancer before playing Freelancer?

I just played the demo to Freelancer and totally enjoyed it. Now I want to purchase the retail version when it hits stores later this week.

The only problem is that I've never played Starlancer (apparently the first game in the series). Would I be able to get into Freelancer if I've never played Starlancer?

That's right, you don't have to play SL before playing FL, but it's just nice to have some background info when you start playing Freelancer.

BTW, welcome to TLR Bananko

You still could buy it
its just about 1.99$ at eb
so if you get your fl copy from eb, you could just add sl on it ^_^
its a good game imo

but well you do not need it, fl is based about 1000 years later, so you will not miss really anthing important of the story if you did not have play starlancer, starlancer explains just more or less how the great war in the solar system started.

Do you have to play Starlancer if you wanna enjoy Freelancer? NO!
Did you miss something when you didn't play Starlancer? YES! You've missed one of the best games of the genre. i just pity every poor soul that hasn't played it.

Yes you do have to play Starlancer before you play Freelancer...
Otherwise you miss out on one hell of a bug...

(Coalition of Starlancer... technologically more advanced then the Houses of Freelancer???)
(It's about the cloaking... man, the biggest bug in the entire game! )

Yeah, starlancer was one of my favorite games. And I bought it because I had to buy a game (an irritating thing of me, I can't resist the power of a budget title )

This post has made me Flight Lieutenant, yay

Na!

Starlancer is a good game....but Freelancer is a much diffirent kind of game. You will get enough "headsup info" at the start of Freelancer. Besides the world of Freelancer has advanced so much that using a joystick is silly.

You don't have a background with Chris Roberts games I take it

Are you familiar with Wing Commander? With WC, Origin, and Chris Roberts, create the WC universe. Privateer was a non linear space exploration/trading/shot-em-up game based in the WC universe.

When Roberst left Origin and started Digital Anvil, then was purchased by MS, MS had Warthog of the UK developing a space game, that was altered to become Starlancer.

Why? Freelancer was the big game DA was developing, and in so creating a new gaming universe. So the idea with StarLancer is to introduce players to the history of how the Freelancer universe came into being. So with StarLancer you are fighting in the war mentioned in the beginning of Freelancer, trying to help the Alliance keep from being exterminated. Just like all normal flight sims, i.e. the WC series, the X-Wing, Tie-Fighter types, etc., SL is a mission based, go from one mission to the next with no flexibility design.

So SL = WC in this new universe from DA. Freelancer = Privateer. Freelancer is the go anywhere, do whatever game for this universe. Allows for more replayability with this design

So do you need to play SL? No. Should you? Yes, if you'd like to experience what leads up to the sleeper ships needing to get the hell out. SL doesn't get you up to the sleepers, but it lays the groundwork for why you would know the alliance was in bad shape and would want to leave
