Mines

They're great! They make pretty explosions when you shoot them!!

So has anyone found anything else they can do? (Oh no sir, surely you don't mean mines actually do any damage. Ever.)

I haven't done it yet, but I'm wanting to see how far out you can go... I used to love to do that in the game "SkyNET".

Everything gets weird in SkyNET, and there's a lot of misplaced textures.

The AI is pretty good at using them, but I haven't been able to use them very well. They are useful when you need to blow up some static object a little quicker. When you strafe it drop mines as you pass, they will gravitate towards it and hit it. Or run circles around it, constantly dropping mines. Just be careful, I'm pretty sure mines go after anything, even your allies and yourself

I've been tailed by several enemies and taken out more than a few by using mines. I was using Seeker mines in the demo.

Oh yeah, that reminds me. The only ship I've ever killed with mines was one of those 2 Anubis that follow you in the 2nd to last SP mission. I ran out of torps and started using mines on the generators, it took me a while to realize that all the pretty fuzzballs are floating toward my teammates, which are a good distance from me, instead of the gigantic structure I'm literally hugging.

Lovely.

Has it ever occurred to you that mines are useless against a stationary target? I think you are trying to hard to be unhappy with mines. Mines blow up friend or foe, they are not discriminatory...hey, just like REAL mines in REAL life!

I admit I'm not being too fair here. But hey, last time I checked REAL mines in REAL life are suppose be stationary and not fly around and mingle with people. That's actually what surprised me at first.

"Christ! That mine is possessed!! It's flying towards me!!!"

Well, I guess the only way that (stationary mines) would work is to make the mines much more sensitive and the explosion much bigger. Like the mines in Starfleet Command or something.

I don't have the full version yet so I don't know, but aren't there stationary minefields in the game? I seem to remember seeing screenshots with mines in them, they were spheres with big spikes sticking out of them.

Yes there are those mine fields, and that's really how mines should work: stationary, camoflauged and damaging, instead of these cute little shiny fruitballs. They only function they've served for me is wasting a valuable key bind.

They sure make pretty explosions, though.

no, mines are not good on stationary objects, at all. that's what torpedos are for. i don't care for mines myself, but the best use for them is when an enemy flies directly toward you (and.. they always do unless you kill them first). you fire a mine, and whip the mine in their direction.

Post Mon Mar 03, 2003 8:03 pm

Well I've used them pretty effectively against stationary objects. Just drop it nearby and it floated directly towards it and blew up, damaging it.

At least FL mines are not like those in some Star Wars games, which shoot at you with lasers.
I would rather have a mine chase me, at least it is easier to avoid.
By the way, do countermeasures fool mines?

does anyone know which is the best mine in sp? not in the demo.... and btw is it possible to get torps in the demo version and could u damage a base using them...not like destroy it...just make some debris???
Phoenix out
PS: don't worry i never play with weapons...(against object more powerfull than I)

Uly,

You are not considering the sea-born mines and if they are not tethered then they can come at you if you are heading against the current/tide. Both Iraq ans Iran had placed mines in the Persian Gulf and they are not always stationary, though they did lack any sort of discretionary guidance.

Huffer, The US Navy has mines that fire a MK-48 (or is it MK-46? I forget exactly) torpedo at the tgt.

Food for thought...
Cheers,
Lynx
