Okay, I've probably done something wrong here, but I just can't get engine kill to work. From what I understand, it simply lets you drift with inertia. But for some reason it's just not working for me. If I press and hold engine kill when I'm cruising, it simply stops cruising and return to normal speed, if I press and hold engine kill at afterburner speed and let go of thruster, speed drops back to 80, and if I press engine kill at 80, it makes this sound and doesn't do anything. Basically, I have no idea how to work this thing. Am I doing something wrong? Does it have anything to do with mouse flight, mouse wheel, etc? Or can some one give me a precise example of using engine kill? TIA
It's not hard, I don't even know what the default keys are though I changed mine. All you do is throw on your cruise engines or thrusters then press the engine cut key and you will keep moving in that same direction even while you spin around and fire 360°. To get out of the slide just thrust forward in a direction again. If that's not working I'm not sure what to tell you, that's as simple as I can explain it.
It is a toggle key, so don't hold it.
But it doesn't reduce your speed to zero when you activate it. It lets you turn your ship, change the direction you are facing while still going in the direction you were going in when you killed the engines.
Pressing the key again turns your engines back on, and you immediately zoom off in the new direction you are now facing.
You can do really really fast turns with this. It is also awesome for straffing runs against the weapons platforms in the demo.
See my thread about advanced controls for more ideas.

Argh. I understand the concept of sliding and I know how it's supposed to work, but it just isn't working. I'm sure I'm pressing the right key, but it simply doesn't do anything. The only thing it does is to drop out of cruise when I'm cruising and make this sound whem I'm flying at normal speed. Otherwise, no amount of pressing seem to have any effect on my ship whatsoever.
I really don't know what's going on here, but one of my suspicion is that it has something to do with the mouse wheel. Normally, when I let go of the increase throttle key the speed drops down to zero, but if I use my mouse wheel to increase throttle it stays at 80. Perhaps it's cancelling the engine kill effect by continuously applying throttle? Well, I don't know, but even if I don't use mouse wheel throttle the problem is still there.
Sigh...

Okay, finally got it worked out. As it turns out, the problem does lie with the mouse wheel. It seems that the way the mouse wheel is set, at least for me, is not just "accel." and "deccel.". Instead, there are three throttle stages that can be controlled with the wheel, which are "accel.", "neutral" and "deccel." When it's at accel., it acts as if you're constantly holding the accel. key, thus canceling out the engine kill effect. The same goes for deccel. As such, engine kill will only work when it's at neutral.
What's the annoying part about this set up, though, it works as if you'r scrolling through a list, and only the item in the exact middle is neutral. It's a bit hard to explain, but basically if you scroll up 6 times from neutral, you'll have to scroll down 6 times to go back to neutral again, and 7 times to deccel. What this means is that if you lost track of how many times you scrolled, which is very likely, you'll have to try it out slowly, therefore making mousewheel control useless in combat situation.
I think it'd make much more sense to make it so that only one scroll is required to change to the next level of accel/deccel regardless of how many times you've scrolled.
Hope they patch it.

why dont you get a junky mouse like me (one without a wheel) and use that as an excuse not to use the difficult wheel "manuever". the 'wasdx' config works easy for me...makes your hand useful

this is how powersliding works:
a) you must be in freeflight mode, not goto or dock mode you can see this at the top of your HUD
b)you canot use the throtle while in a power slide if you do the engine will turn back on
c) you have to hit the bound engine kill key
if you follow theses steps it will work every time
note that you can still use reverse thrust, afterburners, and the strafe keys while in a power slide and you will still be in a power slide
