Mining. Mining?

Shooting flying barrels, crystals, boulders in arcade style... is that called mining?

Oh, mighty David Braben, come and save as all (with Elite4).

Enjoy the wait for Elite 4 elsewhere, if you don't like Freelancer. I can guarantee you'll be waiting longer for that than anything else.

It's mining of a sort. The developers could've made you pound on a rock for a few minutes with special lasers you had to buy, but they didn't. It's faster this way.

And say, if you needed some quick credits to repair components, you could just plunge through the asteroid field for a few seconds and gather scrap metal instead of fighting enemies and possibly damaging yourself more.

Hm... how did mining work again in Elite? Ah yes, you shot asteroids... arcade style. So what?

Hmm in Elite: Frontier didn´t you land on planets or small asteroids to mine?
It´s been awhile since I played it, so I could be wrong, now that universe was HUGE, I remember finding that abandoned Thargoid ship somewhere, or was that just a rumor..
Was nice checking out a msg style board with video for work, haggling for price, hauling passangers. Or taking package transfer jobs, with the video as static if they where illegal.

Yeah something like that, I think you left some machinery on the planet, took off for a while, then came back to pick up whatever it had mined. At least I think that's the way it was, I could never be assed figuring it out.

I don't really run this place but I have an understanding with the people who do.

Well, yes now it comes back to my mind: In Elite II (and III) you could set a mining device on a planet and come back later to take it aboard again. In Elite you had to equip a special mining laser and shoot multiple times at an asteroid which would eventually break down into a container of ore. Then you had to collect it manually by flying over it (same procedure as with loot). Maybe more realistic, but not much fun. I do prefer the Freelancer approach.

Scavenging, perhaps... but not minig.

It is just a diffirent kind of mining Shylion. Some gather gold from rivers ( panning ) and some get gold from deep mining operations ( South Africa ). It is realistic to me to blowup a rock or junk metal and be able to gather some byproducts from what is left over.

On a side note..Elite Frontier was so dang buggy it was unplayable for me. I took it back to the store ( you could do that at EB back then ). So what if a game has so many features in it....but in the end has so many bugs as to make it a pain to play? Freelancer is a real work of art. It not only has a huge amount of stuff to do in...it is also allmost bug free!
