Damn Thorndog, that make you as old and decrepid as me. During that time, I was at Bragg.

Great post Gunny. Being in the Navy(PO2), I've had a few Gunnys in my face screaming at me. It's good of you to show civilians that we military are just as normal as everyone else.

I came. I saw. I conquered. And sometimes get conquered.

Speaking of fond memories. I still have an HP Vectra Pentium 90 with a 150 overdrive chip. I have been known on occasion to drag it out, dust it off and fire that boat anchor up just to play WC1-4 and P1 & 2 and Elite. Yes I still have them. They are the only games on it.

After playing the FL demo last week I went back and played Privateer 1. Much to my enjoyment it all ran. After several hours of play time, I decided to play wc 1. For a game as small as it is, I was amazed to see scorch marks on my fighter after each battle. I had totally forgot about that little detail. Yes by todays standards the graphics are cheezy but the game is still a real good play. What happened to DEPTH of play? You would think after all these years that our games would offer a deeper and more detailed game play experience.

I personally do not think I will sleep tonight. I am anxiously awaiting the delivery of FL to my local EB store...it should be around 10 am. only 11 more hours to go. I will have read the manual on my way home with FL in my possesion. So what if the SP campaign is short. It is all about exploration right? The SP campaign only shows you roughly 1/2 of the universe, so whats in the other half?

What a great thread!

Privateer 1...wow, thats all I have to say about that game! I also remember when I first bought it. Heck, I still read the manual sometime because I love the story and the background on the planets. I got started on Wing Commander with WC2:Vengence of the Kilrathi. After that, I just had to get the first WC and the expansions. And then Privateer came out...

Does everyone remember that feeling you got when you first landed on New Detroit and how shady it was? Wow...and the sound effects that went with the planet just made you think "Yes, I am a criminal and I love it!"

I am sorry to say, though, that Privateer 2 could never compare to the first one. I was very disappointed with it. I couldn't quite place my disappointment until I realized that it was not set in the Wing Commander universe. The Kilrahi were gone as well as jump points! And the new universe that it was set in was so bland and not very entertaining. Thanks a bunch Erin Roberts! =)

Thankfully, I like the universe that the Lancer series is in. I am looking forward to having that same feeling I had so many years ago when I landed on New Detroit...and I think FL will deliver!

On a side note,

I see that some of you are having troubles running the first Privateer. Well, may I suggest buying a 486 from Ebay? I bought a complete 486 computer with DOS 6.0, a mouse, a keyboard, and a sound card ALL for $6 from some guy on Ebay. And yep, I bought it to run Privateer 1 again. I got this new comp. back in October. The game loaded right up after I got some extended freed up!

There where only 3 ships in PRIV ( the ship you start with does not count ) I can't remember the heavy fighters name but that ship rocked, i'm not much of a trader, I'm more of a merc. When PRIV's add-on was released ( rightoues fire ) I could not help but grin when I could use my 4 Plasma Blasters to their full potential. Damn, I loved those upgrades in PRIV-RF.

...Yes sir thats right... just drop your cargo or I can open your hull with my twin plasma blasters, and take the cargo for myself.......Thank you, have a nice flight.

The fighter was called the Centurion, the gunboat was the Orion, the merchant vessel was the Galaxy, and the ship you started with was the Tarsus.

And how could you not count the Tarsus? =) In some ways, it was better then the Galaxy and the Orion. And, I love being a merchant, so the Centurion just was terrible for me until I decided to do the story.

I love Freelancer so far. There seems to have been a void in the spacesim ever since Wing Commander hit the grave and although there have been a few misc. ones since, this is the one that brings back the old feel. Even Starlancer didn't do it for me... played it once and it's just sitting around in my house somewhere. This is Privateer 3 so far as I'm concerned.

For a while I was involved in a fanmade flight sim which was allowed to use the WC universe and, being in charge of story outline, I was going to have it take place in the Gemini Sector. Oh the memories. Getting the Centurion for the first time... tempting fate in that arm of Kilrathi space... going pirate and pulverizing the military even right next to Perry station. Ahh.. good times.

And does anyone remember Frontier: First Encounters?
It ruled!

Rikaelus,

The best part of Wing Commander: Privateer had to be when you shot up so many Militia and Confeds that even the Kilrathi were your ally! Now that was rich.

The worst part of the game was that, during one of the story missions, you had to go around killing Mercs to destroy a blockade. This was terrible because you became an enemy of the Mercs, the Militia, and the Confed just because you followed the story mission you HAD to perform if you wanted to advance to the Steltek gun. That was the single flaw of Privateer, in my opinion!

Frontier first encounters was pretty cool, great for freedom... though once you got the thargoid ship it all sorta died. Combat was pretty boring in those games I thought, maybe I just didn't fight properly

Privateer, still one of my favourites if only i could run it (I have an old P-166 that should run it but can't be bothered setting it up at the moment... maybe when I get a new monitor for this computer). The joys of blasting retro's to hell "Can it be? Has the god of man abandonned us?" hehehe And righteous fire was a good add-on to boot.

Privateer 2... what can I say? If Privateer had never existed Privateer 2 would have been great, but Privateer showed us that it could have been so much more. Thats not to say that it was a bad game though... just didn't grab me like Privateer did. (And I never did work out what the heck those ships that looked like Talons had to do with anything!?!?!)

Privateer has been the game I have judged the playability of other games by.I brought it late ,it was on cd with righteous fire included .I can remember feeling cold at the larger space ports and the seediness of the gambling ports. The absolute thrill of running slaves and drugs(tobaco) and getting away with it and the huge profit .If Freelancer is just as good which by all accounts it is I will be happy.

Luck has nothing to do with it !
