Mining asteroids for ore/gold/etc... can it be done?

In Elite you could get a mining laser and get ore and metals from shooting asteroids. Can you do this in FL at all?

yes, but you just shoot at the asteroids and they sometimes drop stuff

Are you sure? I've tried randomly shooting stuff in most fields I'm in but I've never had a drop before...

You can only mine the little ones that move around really quickly. Turn on your loot screen (by clicking the little treasure chest), and start shooting the little ones that move around. It should only take one shot and they'll blow up. Sometimes they'll drop stuff (I've only seen scrap metal, but I haven't mined too much). When they drop something, tractor it in.

Yes..you can get scapmetal from the debri fields. I have done it several times.

Yah, in the demo you can get only scrap metal, but it sells for a fairly decent 18 credits at the shipyards. There are little things that are slowly moving around that look like canisters. When you put your targeting reticle over them, the reticle becomes a white circle that rotates. Shoot the "canister" one time and occasionally loot will pop out.

. Decent is like 800 credits, good is 1500 and there's some stuff you can sell for 2000 bucks... You can get up to 450000 bucks from one proper trade run with the German Freighter.
