can u smuggle things? the police often scan your cargo without result... what exacly are they looking for? or are they just scanning cause thats more realistic?

They're looking for Cardamine (Drugs) and Artifacts.
You can smuggle.

ok but can i take smuggling missions? and what happens if i get caught?

Nope,AFAIK there aren't any smuggling missions except the one that you give yourself since there are patrols everywhere especially around Manhattan.What I usually do when smuggling is to use the debris fields or go through the badlands & go around known heavily patrolled areas.
