SP vs MP

Is it possible to start a multiplayer FL game and be the only person playing that game ie. can you specify when starting how many players will be taking part? I'm asking 'cos from what I've heard certain systems in the FL galaxy are closed in single player until the necessary plot mission has been completed. Don't like the sound of that, I'd prefer to be able roam all over the shop as I saw fit, as presumably the plot missions don't feature in multiplayer FL games.

Also, I've got broadband and my brother has got ISDN, so could I start a two-player multiplayer server on my machine that he could log into?

Apoloties for my ignorance, this multiplayer lark is totally new to me 8)!

Love the demo, bring on April 11th!

Yep you can start your own MP server and do whatever the hell you feel like on your own, with zero restrictions.

How do you start you own server?

Cool! MP it is for me then on April 11th ! I've got nothing against the plot missions in themselves, just don't like the idea of being restricted as to where I can and can't go. Seems to go against the whole ethos of a space trading game.

So say I start a multiplayer game with just me playing it. What happens at the start if there are no plot missions?

Do I just start on Manhattan with the usual amount of cash?

There's a seperate aplication that you can start (FL Server, it's installed with the game)

Uh, April 11? is that your birthday? I mean did ya take a peak in the closet and see the receipt for a preordered freelancer? hmmm....just being nosy...

Oh yeah, i just read that you start in Manhattan with 1000 credits. just like the SP game. With other people of course...

LOL, JT! Unfortunately I'm not that lucky! April 11th is when us poor Brits finally get our hands on Freelancer for real, unlike you lucky S.O.B.'s in the States, who'll get it any day now.

BTW, anybody know if anywhere in the States will ship to the UK and how much?

Question about MP, can I shut down my computer if I start a MP server and restart with my same equipment etc? I'm asking because my friend is coming over and we're going to network our computers to play FL when it comes out, and I was wondering if I shut down my computer if we'll lose our data.

It should create save files on the server for each person that logs in (you have to create a character when you first join a server), so you shouldn't lose anything unless those save files get wiped.

The MP is hella fun.

Stormtrooper Tactics 101: Okay class, repeat after me. "There he is! Blast em!" Very good.

You guys should keep in mind that WANTING to fly around and do as you please is not the same as being ABLE to do so. The SP missions take you on a specific progression of difficulty that still exists in the MP world so you should keep that in mind when flying into an MP game.

What I'm saying is that flying your Patriot into a Edgewold system or the Rhienland border systems will make you a dead Freelancer very quickly.

BTW, the progression is LIBERTY -> BRETONIA -> KUSARI -> RHEINLAND. The border systems between each have varied risks (moving from colony to colony can be a challenge at early levels) and the edgeworlds will kick your butt.

A good indicator of whether or not you should be strolling about the galaxy at your current location are the mission levels in the bar. They should roughly equal your own LVL.

Message received and understood, B.G.! I'll be careful out there!

Seriously, I know what you're getting at and I didn't plan on venturing any further than Liberty and Bretonia unless I'd got some kick-ass guns and shielding.
