Only one Major complaint...

Only one Major complaint...

Hail All,

Okay, so my will-power broke and I started playing the demo.

I have to say that I am actually pleased with the game, and will be even more pleased when the 4th arrives and my pre-order shows up on my doorstep.

However....you KNEW this was coming...

There is ONE (1) thing that is REALLY irritating me, and to 99.999% of other humans this will sound very trivial...

They forced usage of the F1 key to open the maingame-menu, instead of the Escape key.
Yes, this is VERY minor to most people, but come on, even an idiot knows you hit "Esc" to open the main menu of a game & thereby pause the game!
What really ticks me off though is that they don't even allow us to re-map that key.

Plus, it just doesn't really make sense.
The default layout of F2, F3, & F4, are "Go To", "Dock", & "Formation" respectively...it only MAKES SENSE that F1 would be "Free Flight" to match the HUD Display top center of the screen as all the other "F" keeys seem to do!

As I said, trivial perhaps.
But, when I have to pause the game real quick to run to the door, kick the dog, or shoot out at the neighbor's kids, and I hit the "Esc" key out of habit only to come back to find the "Load Savegame" screen...well, it gets old. LMAO!

Other than that one small pet peeve I am pretty much happy with the game.
Yeah, there are some other small issues that I dislike, but I will still enjoy it, and it is still worth the price....to me at least.

Anyway, just needed to vent that.

Anytime a game refuses to let you remap keys, it's enough for me to throw the game away.

You're not alone. While I can live with the F1 key, I cannot live with the forced mouse1 mapping. I swear it's like the devs were trying to piss ME off specifically

Everytime (and I mean EVERY time) I get into a hostile situation, I invariably hit my PRIMARY mouse button and wonder why the hell aren't I firing?! The upside to this is, of course, my left mouse button will get less use than it's used to The downside being after 20+ years of gaming, about 12-13 of which involve the use of a mouse, this is completely counter intuitive, and just another example of the idiocy that DA calls design decisions.

I have to admit that i absolutely don't know why they did it, that it fooled me multiple times and that it's indeed very strange that one can't even remap it. But i thought "Ok, they smoked some bad stuff when they dealt with the F-keys" and arranged myself with this, indeed counterintuitive, control mechanism.

hehe I gotta laugh at this one, I thought exatly the same thing about both the F1 key and primary fire button on the mouse. You wouldn't believe how many times Ive shot friendlies when I was only trying to target them.

Still I wouldn't call it a major complaint, it is pretty minor whatever way you look at it. Maybe you'll probably be able to remap controls in the full version??? Anyone??

Post Thu Feb 27, 2003 1:19 am

Surely you will be able to remap controls in the full game....right?

umm guys im not trying to come over as some uber 1337 gamer or anything but it took me literally 5 mins to get used to (not master) the buttons/interface

later.....

I am with ronin_UK_
Never tried myself, but you can try the ini file and remap the keys there.
Being a former Monkey Island player it took me no time to get used to F1. Plus you can switch mousebuttons in windows for left handers, otherwise why would you want to reconfigure the mouse? Of course that's just me .

I got used to it in no time. It just happens once in a while that i mix it up, and that's because it's pretty illogical.

Whats wrong with the mouse buttons? whats so wrong with the right hand mouse button doing all the actions?

Havent you guys played StarCraft??? lol

Post Thu Feb 27, 2003 2:55 am

I wasn't talking about the mouse buttons, i'm totally fine with that. I was talking about the F1-thing. The keys F2-F9 are all mapped with the navigation and information functions in order of their appearance as icons on screen. It would be logical to put freeflight on F1, because that would be exactly the place where it would be considering that the other F-keys worklike they do. But nope... F1 is the game menu while ESC (the traditonal game menu key) is some sort of reduced free flight key (it shuts the cruise drive down ,which the free flight icon on screen doesn't). I'm not complaining and it works for me, i just don't see why the heck they did it that way in the first place.

LMAO, this one is up there in one of the funniest "complaints" ever.

And like DATD, im quite accustomed to this already because ive played Monkey Island.

Why is this a big deal again?

I wouldnt mind playing left handed You can see from the E3 movie that the protagonist is left handed anyway.

Please don't check. Please!

Luckily i'm used to being able to fire with both mouse buttons (Unreal Tournament + Unreal Tournament InstaGib).
I usually 'soften them up' with the left mouse button and then 'finish the job' with the right mouse button..
And i've played some RTS's (somehow, about half uses the Right mouse button for action, the other half uses the left... very irritating when switching between Red Alert 2 and Warcraft 3... )
Anyways, so the mouse wasn't that tough for me...

The F1 key is!
Damn, i keep pressing ESC instead of F1, just to find out it dousn't do anything...
(And yes, i've played Monkey Island as well, still not used to it ).
Ah well, guess it's a matter of time before we'll all get accustomed to it...
And then when Freelancer 2 comes out with the ESC key for the menu we'll all shout: "DAMN, that is so illogical, i'm totally used to the F1 key! Why can't we remap it!?"

I love the mousecontrol and have no problems with using the second mousebutton as a primary attack button. And the F1 key is just as good as the ESC key. Maybe DA thought we needed a little change. By the way ESC is used to get out of formation and auto dock.
I have no complains about the game. I love all of it. And the ability to formate with patrols and ships makes the wingman question "gone with the wind". Now I just formate and have all the wingmen I want. Well I cant control them, but I know they are on my side

Now I just have to wait for 18 of April. Snufs, its a long wait

I Rule!!!!!

First of all, lol @ PD
I dont have had any real problems with the F1- ESC issue.
Not as much as in BF1942, where I always hit ESC when I wanted to change spawn locations instead of Enter.
