Must the CD be in the drive?

I would like to keep the cd safe.. Can Freelancer run with the cd not in the drive?

If not, Darn. I like to keep others sticky hands away from good stuff!
No more playdough in the cd-rom please?

Legally, it must be..

IIRC backup is legal as long as you use it for yourself and you own the original game. There are other ways though.

Thanks guys!

If I remember correctly.

or "If I Recall Correctly".
Cracks are not reccomended as you can't apply patches when you use it. (You need to save a backup of the original file etc...) Some people use NoCD crack to listen to Audio CDs while they're playing. Since FL has good music, it's possible to live without custom audio .

Yeah there is a way.

I do not advocate the following if you are planning on ripping the game off. I know the devs have put in quite a number of hours into polishing the game, enough said.

Ok enough of a rant. IIRC, Freelancer uses one of the disc protection schemes. So you need the disc in to startup. But I believe that once it is started up, you don't need the disc anymore. If you have free disc space do the following:
* Make an ISO of the disc
* Download and use Daemon Tools.

Daemon tools will attempt to mimic the disc protection mechanism, as well though YMMV.

I tried running WinAmp in the background of the demo, but the songs freeze for a few seconds every so often. It's the first game for me where this happens.

Ok, that might work, what if I make a copy of the cd,,,, for a backup only!
I am paying for the game... Preorder gamestop!

Now that we are past that,, i could run the copy in the drive and if someone feeds the dog or bird with it ill still have the game.??

Ship early Gamestop!

Get the nocd crack. Thats all.

Concerning the issue about "i can make a back up because it is my game" that is not always the case. You must read the Terms of Agreement to see if that is possible first because it varies game to game. It is a misconception that you are allowed to copy all your software.

No more talk about this.

Even if the Terms of Agreement say you can´t make a security copy, at least over here in germany, and most likly aswell in whole eu, it is still legal.

Terms of Agreement can not overide just national or international law.
Dunno about the us, there this might be the case, cause the copyright laws are there much more harsh.

So normaly at least in eu, ONE COPY should be always legal, but you can not run the software at the same time at more than one pc legal, and you can not make more than one copy normaly.
