Trade Lane question

Once you've entered a trade lane (pretty sure that's what they're called), is there any way to leave it without it being attacked by pirates? It would be nice to set up ambushes farther from the endpoints without having to cruise there...

Yup... hit ESC and there you go.

just hit the free flight icon (first one on the top left). it will dump you out of the trade lane.
