I have not seen this function in the game and so I don't believe it is there. Someone with more experience than I can probably tell you better, but the answers to my questions about whether there are more than missions which just involve travelling somewhere and killing some people have been that escort missions are not in there.

Now, what you COULD do is fly in formation with a merchant ship and attack anyone who attacks your formation, which would raise your reputation with whoever you were escorting. You won't get paid, but you would at least feel like you were escorting.

What he said, formation. But if you are just starting out and lane gets hacked.. run, let them be bait while you bolt for the gate.

This game is VERY shallow. Things like hiring escorts for your cargo ship WOULD have made this a GREAT game. If the missions adapted themselves that would be nice. Instead, regardless if you are piloting a fighter or a freighter, the missions are the same.

Hmm, what is stoping you from hireing other players in mp ?
Get the biggest frighter in game, and add two very heavy fighters, you get that way over 400 cargo, together with a good protection. or if you are still low level, take maybe the reihnland frigther together with 2 defender.
