Reviews who needs em?

Well I spent most of my evening playing the demo.

IMO it made me want the game more. Let me break it down bit by bit. Both pro and con.

Pro

1. The SP story will be good even though maybe a little short. I really like how it starts.
2. The game has good replay value. Especially for MP.
3. Graphics are good. Very nicely done.
4. The game plays very smooth even on a minimum requirement machine. This is a big one for the masses and nice to see. I tried it on 2 machines a minimum and a new machine built for gaming.
5. It has a good solid easy to understand interface. Flight/combat takes some getting used to but good overall.
6. Combat is as good as any space sim. I just haven't decided on 3rd person or First person. They both have their good points.
7. Cut scenes are very nice, clear and fluid at full screen even on a minimum machine.
8. Navigation is a breeze!

Cons

1. The we don't own this place but know people who do gets real old real fast. But it is just an annoyance, nothing more.
2. Sometimes it is difficult to stay on target and you need to use the throttle a lot.
3. When your rep is bad you get NO rest unless docked.
4. It is very expensive to fix your rep. Early in the game this could be a problem.
5. I wouldn't mind walking around a bit on stations and planets. Hey I had the same wish in PI&2. Having instant access to resources is ok though.
6. The economy is static. I know I'm beating a dead horse. But a static economy has good points as well. With a bit of exploring you can figure out what the good trade routes are.
7. The sound is sometimes a bit choppy on a minimum machine. Not bad though.

Overall I would give it a 8.8. For a Privateer fan it will do nicely. It is sure to satisfy the MP gamer for this genre as it will be a good addition to the collection.

The bottom line....I will still buy it.

Look at it this way. It beats the heck out of E&B.

Thanks for the review Lance Cutter ! It's nice to see a clear and objective review for once, next to all the "Why Freelancer Sucks !!!!" threads

Again, thx !

Well I don't find the above necessarily bad really.
2. It just takes practice - and good thing that you actually DO need to do anything than just point and click
3. Depends on the area you're in, really - if you know people don't like you in a place, might as well not go there if you can't take the heat.
4. Wouldn't it be annoying though if you could bribe yourself into universal likedom at the snap of a finger?

Eraser you are welcome. I just tought I would post my initial thoughts of the demo with as much objectivity as possible. In the end ut us just another opinion. The game does play like privateer still.

Please do not get me wrong here. I may have listed them as a con but they are not a bad thing really. Actually having to fly is overall a good thing. I know I need more practice in mouse flight. I am just finding it somewhat difficult to get used to.

So, there are particular areas to avoid? Good to know thx. Kinda hard for a newb to know that.

On the rep repair, my reasoning is simple. I can buy a ship cheaper than fixing my rep. I set back and went damn! 57,000 credits to fix it? Then to add insult to injury you must fight a lot and go through the expense of ship repair and replenish a little more than I think is necessary in the begining.

The demo does raise a few Qs.

1. In the begining you do get to choose who you are. Correct?
2. Is the starting scenario the same for each character?

Sometimes it is hard to judge a game based solely on a demo as many elements are just not there.

There are not enough cons to keep me from buying the game. I still like it as much as I had expected to. I have been following this game from the very early stages of development and have been very interested to see it. Now I have and am so much the better for it.

Like I said in the begining. Definitely a good game and like all genres not for everyone. For example I do not care for the side scrolling fighting games. But hey that is just me.

The objective is to find what you like and enjoy the experience. It is after all entertainment.

No, you always play as Edison Trent (or Trent Edison, we not figured that out yet)

What do you mean with this? I don't get it, dumb me

He is missing quotes and it's confusing. He's talking about the repetative conversations when docked and getting rumors/missions.

It should read:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. The "we don't own this place but know people who do", gets real old real fast. But it is just an annoyance, nothing more.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And it is very annoying. I have ESC programmed to a controller button just for that reason (also to skip the docking cut scenes).

Good review of the demo !

You made some good points about the game in the demo and most of what you said I agree with. We do need to point out to DA some things we would like to see fixed in a patch. But overall...they have done a fantastic job with Freelancer!
