There's only one cheat: practice! Keep on trying and learn to get better. Cheating would ruin the game so don't even think about doing it.
Another thing: get a good weapon balance. You need some guns that do kill shields very fast and other guns that do more damage to the hull of ships. With shield only guns you will have a hard time to bring the ship down and vice versa.
Talking of hard times: use the engine kill maneuver because foes seem to have a hard time hitting one when the ship is drifting. And this is how it works: make sure your ship is in free flight mode (the symbol left from "go to" and "dock" ) or the engines won't shut down. Then you press the engine kill key (default "Z" or "Y" depending on your keyboard layout). Your ship will continue to fly into the last direction you were heading while you can turn around in any direction. You can still strafe left and right (very important to evade enemy fire) as well as using the thrusters (TAB key). By doing so you can maneuver parallel to an enemy and shoot him from the side. Don't forget to evade his weapons fire. But be aware: if you should try to change your speed with W, S or the mouse wheel, the engines will fire up again.
All this may sound very complicated and it is when you are new to it, but after some while you will do it almost automatically which will definately improve your combat performance.
p.s.: welcome to the forums.
