So what is it about Freelancer et al?

So, what is it about Freelancer and games of this type that does it for you guys? I'm curious to know if you're addiction has a similar basis to mine.

For me it stems from the daddy of them all, Elite on the BBC Micro. Prior to this the BBC Micro had been fed a diet of arcade conversions and platform games, some passable, some dire. Then along comes this totally new concept that allowed total freedom to go where you want, do what you want and to discover the meaning of addiction while you were doing it.

The freedom was one thing, the idea of trading goods between space stations in order to make money was something else. Watching my measly 100 credits increase in size with each successive trip became my entire focus, over and above family, schoolwork, everything. It was and remains my primary fascination with games of this type. I just find the idea of trading in space to be incredibly compulsive. I s'pose it appeals to the part of me that always wanted to be Han Solo.

Then there was the combat. Jeez. I remember great, twisting, turning dogfights (particularly against Mambas or Sidewinders) that could last several minutes, sometimes ending with those immortal words 'Right on, Commander!' being flashed up on screen, meaning that another step towards achieving the coveted Elite status had been taken.

I was 12 or 13 when all this took place and the obsession has never left me. I spent many hours with Frontier: Elite 2, until I realised that the author's insistence on textbook astrophysics rendered combat as I had known and loved it impossible. I went without a fix until Privateer 2 was released. I know a lot of you think it sucks, but I thought it was great and it gave me the same buzz I had got from the original Elite, particularly hosing down Skulls with four Kravens and a Mass Ion Cannon.

As my computer power increased I moved on to X:BTF and Xtension, but this was similar to Frontier, although while it didn't feature anally-retentive physics I found the combat equally hard to get into.

So here I am, living in the UK and sadly, a month and a half away from getting my grubby hands on a kosher UK copy of Freelancer. Like most of you, I've followed development of FL since it was announced and I'm expecting another Priv2 with more bells and whistles and hopefully, less FMV. I fully expect to spend months playing this, as I love what I'm hearing about DA hiding debris fields and the like that you only discover from long-term play. I would never be surprised if this was the game that gets me into multiplayer in a big way and makes me realise why I'm forking out £25 per month for a 600K broadband line.

So what about you lot? Am I alone in my fascination with trading?

Welcome onboard.
Ive been there to. Pressing the f1 key and pushing out into cold space with Elite. Ive played it so much that I STILL pull it out from the dust from one time to another. Priv 2 I also have, and it was good but not actually the immersivness of Elite. Lets hope Freelancer does it for us hardcore fans. If not, we always have X2 coming along. But im pretty sure Freelancer will keep me up in long nights ahead.

I Rule!!!!!

It's easy: ever since i was a kid i just love space, undiscovered things and the thought of being able to explore them. Furthermore i was fascinated by the idea of being some sort of outlaw living by my own rules without ever going into that direction for real, for the apparent reasons. Games like Elite are perfect to live that dream without jeopardizing anything. And Freelancer is the game i waited for ever since i played Elite back in the 80's: a vast part of space free for exploration including anomalies which make space interesting in the first place, the freedom to play it in any way i want (lawful, good, outlaw, evil...) and all that in graphics that recreate the beauty of space, something that Elite definately didnt have, being the vector polygon game that it was.

OH MY GOD, THE PRESSURE IS KILLING ME!!! I FEEL LIKE MY HEAD IS GOING TO EXPLODE

I hope to all that is holy that my copy gets here from the US before it's released in the UK.

Oh man Oh man Oh man Oh man Oh man Oh man Oh man Oh man Oh man Oh man Oh man Oh man Oh man Oh man Oh man Oh man I feel like I'm about 12 again waiting for Christmas day, knowing what pressies I've got but not being able to touch them.

If the game never even arrives it has enriched my life in a very real way

I started with the X-Wing series I think... before moving up to Privateer and becoming hooked on the trading, fighting, and basically living the life of a rogue, a character tied to nothing, except the exploration of space and things unknown... that thirst for knowledge, the next upgrade, the newest ship, the next secret.... damn... I can't wait... and I'm gonna make it worse by NOT playing the demo Oh the horror!!!.... someone stop my evil other persona before it is too late!

Good Ol Elite. Yup the great-grandaddy of them all is where I started. Days of skipped classes to play.

That's where it started with me, and then Priv was one of the first PC games I got a hold of.

oh man i cant wait for this game. A friend of mine who works in GAME (UK) says the game is comming out on the 6th of April.

Man i LOVED Elite, though most of my time was spent on Frontier and not the first one. I ended up filling virtually whole 2000 tones of my Panthers cargo space with fuel and headed out to the uncharted regions in the hopes i might just find something (but i didnt).

The fact that u had so much freedom sold that game for me and i traded for most of the time. Though i did do a little bounty hunting and the occasional piracey. The only thing that was lacking from that game was multiplayer.

BUT WAIT, look what they've done. They added multiplayer plus a whole load of new stuff, the game is now complete, and my reign will be terrable and conqer all.

but i digress.

I was hoping for thousands of RL ppl in same universe, but 128 will do. its just the of looting someone and knowing that there defense pattern is prearranged, its an actual person thinking 'OH CRAP, PIRATES' and really does screw about it, coz they know the person attacking him/her is a player that actually does WANT his cargo, and not an NPC who will just fly head long in even if it knows it would die.

MP in this game will rule.

Now begins a new Age... The Age Of Arumin

For me it's being placed in a universe, wide open, and being told "succeed". Pretty much the best part

Post Fri Feb 21, 2003 5:34 pm

Hopefully just a great space to explore and have fun

Places to see, and people to kill.

Let's get those missiles ready to destroy the universe!!

My addiction is much the same as yours Route. I have always been drawn to space, any thought of it. I guess that is why most of my movie collection is SCIFI, most of my games are all space based or SCIFI.

I think what really draws me is the "I can do what I want." that this genre is really about. I can follow the story if I want to and usually do. Another thing I have always liked is the stories and how you had to get clues along the way and the stories open up before you like a beautiful flower opens on a spring day. I like the surprizes and the unknown.

I had times with WC2, WC3, FS2 and Privateer where I felt totally drained after a sortie and would usually notice a nice adrenlain rush about that time and a slightly sweaty palm from gripping the joystick so tightly.

My wife is suddenly finding more litle things to do with her and around the house a little more lately. Hmmm seems like those little requests increased about the same time as I announced March 4th to her. Aww she is very understanding towards my addiction, she KNOWS that I will be here but gone for a few weeks. But like she tells me "Atleast I know where you are at and you still love me." What a woman!

Now where is my pre-order confirmation e-mail again?....oh there it is! In it own little folder where the Ship notice will not go unnoticed or lost in the sea of spam in the inbox.

Played all the space quest games, then took a break from sci fi to play AC. Got back into sci fi with Anarchy online, and now Freelancer.
