can i turn off my ship

you know, like in some sci-fi game you turn off you mech/ship/suit and you won't show up on radar. well does anyone know if you can?
Great for ambushes, and maybe at a fake bait?

I was thinking about this the other day.. that would be a really cool feature.

However, I do not think you can (someone correct me if I am wrong on this)

Nope, there's no power switch on the ship. Even if you turned it off though, I think the kind of radar that they have would detect it: you can see objects floating in space on it, like dropped guns and cargo from destroyed ships.

Not really... The closest thing to doing this is putting an asteroid or piece of debris between you and a big group of ships if you need time to recharge shields or just want to wait for them to get close before popping out.

Other ships don't see you if you're behind an asteroid? Never knew that

Tach is BSing. There's the bracket around you and its viewable from behind asteroids.

EDIT: My apologies, Master Tachyon. =

Um, hello, I never said it would make you invisible, simply that it would shield you from their guns for a bit.

Post Thu Feb 20, 2003 2:21 pm

So you mean just dodging from their shots. They'll come around the 'roid in a few seconds. Any longer, and you might as well have run away. It's fun to dodge through asteroid fields on cruise

This sounds kind of funny. Kind of like cloking in Star Trek or Space Ghost and the invisible ship.

I came. I saw. I conquered. And sometimes get conquered.

Never got the idea of "powering down"...Mostly a sci-fi B-Movie plot device...

Much like "i'll extend my gear and flaps and he will fly right by" or "I'm going ballistic, he will pass right by us", generations of cannon fodder grew up on those movies 8) Good for the rest of us, easy kills.

Even if you had "powered down" any radar would be pick you off...unless you hid the ship or had stealth. Power off might hamper electro-magnetic detection methods, but even a simple IR device would see you since you would have tons of risidual heat. God i hate realisem threads 8)

At least i hope that in FL the fights won't degenerate into a circle fight.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the darkness at Tan Hauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time like tears in rain. Time to die.

When I think of powering down, I think of The Matrix, where they cut power to avoid detection by the sentinels...

If the radar is based on soundwaves or lasertechnoligy there isn't much to do.. Unless in the time of FL, antisoundtech. has been developed. (Not unlikly considering the other techs in FL) and ones ship simply would respond by sending blank noice back...

sound? in space?

Only EM radiation can travel in vacuum. I Think thats the lowest form of realisem that should be maintained....I Can live with the sound of explosions and weapon fire and ships tearing by....Too much of an SW fan to leave that out.

My favorite "power down" situation. (forgive the paraphrasing)

"Captain Solo, this time you have gone too far...no I will not be quiet Chewbacca. Surrender is a perfectly acceptable course of action in extreme circumstances. The Empire may even be gracious enough to ......"

"Then we just 'float' away." "With the rest of the garbage."

Does hiding behind asteroids really shield you from weapons? Maybe it's because my system is slow, but a lot of asteroids appear and disappear when I move towards them. I might try to hide behind one, only to have it disappear.

Let's get those missiles ready to destroy the universe!!

Post Thu Feb 20, 2003 7:54 pm

Well maybe there will be a few EM feild pules (natural or man-made) that will disrupt a ship/s for a period of time allowing you to 'pop' up and attack them.

Post Thu Feb 20, 2003 8:18 pm

Oh no! Don't tell me the asteroids act like the cars in GTA3. You look at them, they are there. You look away a short time and look again: they completely changed their pattern.
