Planet Rings?

I assume there are planets with rings in the game but how do they work? Are they just 2D texture layers put around the planets or do they consist of hundreds of rocks when you fly close to or into them (as it would be in reality)?

There are planets with rings, and it's a very pretty sight. They're only made of a single textured plane, with darker and lighter bands. The texture is quite nice though, and as you get close, some clouds appear around the single layer. You can fly through the layer. I had a lot of fun in one the other day

I've also seen some rings that didn't have a planet in the middle, was pretty strange.

Are there planets with no atmosphere that you can skim over without burning up?

Doubt it, but I've never really tried to find out. Went into the atmospheres a couple of times by accident (went thru the docking ring without starting the docking sequence, oops!)

Too bad the rings ain't made of rocks but this cloud thing should make up for it. Thanks.

as far as i know you can go a little bit into the atmosphere before you burn up, not far but a little

I have a screenshot of a ship flying very close to a ring and you can see the chunks of ice ( atleast that is what they look like ) the ring is made up of...is this a actual game play screenshot or a cutscene?

that would be sweet

I have some amazing sc's of me slingshotting around entire planets...AMAZING!!!

Yah, you do burn up as you enter the atmosphere.

Do you actually slingshot? Does your apeed increase? Is there gravity?

The textures on the rings are mostly transparant, with little bits of stuff inside, but the whole thing itself is a 2d plane. From most angles and any distance that's not right on top of it, the rings look really sweet Get too close though, and it starts looking artificial (2d)

AFAIK, there are no gravity effects, guess FL's engines are powerful enough to cut out the effects completely. Also - the stations have gravity (you walk around on them ) so they must have some tech that generates and cancels out gravity.

Hey, if you wanna see cool rings...go see the neutron star in one of omega systems...I forget which...but it gives off no light...only radiation and its rings are many colored. Just bring plenty of nanobots. The closer you get the more radiation, worth it though...quite a sight.
