Honest Review of Freelancer

Hi all,

thought I would write a mini-review of free lancer since i have been playing the marketing beta for a while now. First of all, the mouse control works. The emphasis is on works. Its a good control scheme. But it lacks the immersive feel of a joystick. There I said it. I think the game should have had an option for the user. Sometimes I do miss it. And I think Combat is easy due to the lack of it.

Graphics are beautiful. But on the simple side. I dont know what it is, but somtimes they have the "cardboard" look. But it wont beat unreal tournament 2 or UT 2003.

Gameplay is addictive but REPETITIVE and gets boring after a while. AI ranges from simple to more simple. Numbers make up for the lack of it. I havent seen the AI do anything stupid, but I havent seen it do anything smart either. Missions for a particular class (e.g. Bounty Hunter) are generic and repetitive. Trade routes are fixed and so are the prices. Demand/supply are not dynamic. Your reputation practically determines everything. Trying to remain neutral is impossible.

Single Player is what keeps the game and story interesting. Somehow you have to do the SP missions which forces one to have a negative reputation with the outlaws. It would have been nice if one could choose from the beginning his/her allegiance.

Planets, Stations, Bases lose their appeal after a while, and one struggles to get through the conversation as fast as possible. But exploration has its rewards. The Neural Net gets updated with the current prices of good, weapons , and ships available everytime you land on a new base.

The professions feel hollow somehow. I think they are too open ended since you can abandon it and try another profession without difficulty. You dont get the feeling that you are a REAL bounty hunter since you really dont establish a personal feeling with a group of people like in a guild. Your not awarded for doing what your doing or get any sort of recognition from the Bounty Hunter Community etc.

Overall, Freelancer is a good game, and the size of the game is astonishing. Its a good experience while it lasts. But I think after the Story Missions end, most people will abandon the SP and try MP since there is no incentive to go on except to get the next best ship.

This was my opinion of the game. Some might differ. And that is perfectly fine. Since everyone will feel a different way about it. Just wanted to say I had fun posting on the forums and I hope you enjoy the game.

Shucks, sounds a bit like the ActionTrip preview...I guess we will be seeing a repetitive game...I still don't mind though, Elite and even the strategy game Patrician II gets boring and repetitive at times. So I really don't have anything to loose.

I am guessing this game is turning out more in the lines of Mafia...do whatever you want in a linear game. Great idea, but some will be turned off and get bored with this real quickly, while others (including me) will be playing months/years. *Looks at Mafia CDs* hmm...looks like I gotta do a reinstall

Thanks for the honest review...

The repetitiveness has been mentioned before.. and that is not good. Of course, that is not going to stop me from buying the game. I am curious to hear others responses to this review.

@IronMonkey.. So am I to assume you will NOT be buying the retail version?

Well, last weekend i showed some of IGN's videos to a friend. After a couple of 'em he said "Oh... another fight". And after seeing all of 'em he said "Now that I have seen any kind of fight in any region of the game, i don't need to play the game anymore". That must be some sort of indicator for how the repetitiveness of the game is seen by someone who isn't totally convinced of Freelancer. I have watched these videos multiple times and i'm still not tired of 'em. I hope that won't change in the game. But let's face it: every game is pretty much repetitive, don't you think?

Well in all honesty I think the action in any game this open-ended gets repetitive. At any rate I think it's very subjective...Mad Dog seems not to mind!

Just remember that its up to you if you like it or not, some people love Final Fantasy... whilst I think its a load of .. something nasty lol.

Whatever happens i'll enjoy Freelancer

<Sarcastically>

Gee IM, good thing you got the marketing beta so you won't waste the rest of your money on the full game since you think it's so boring and repetitive.

Haha. Lucky me. ;-)

The demo is gonna be released a few days before the retail release. You can then get a taste of what the game is like.

Well he has his opinion. I don't know of a game that does not have repititions; WC WCP F4 ect...
I think he did hit on the key to the fun of the game, exploration of the sector.
He my not have liked it as much as we might.. Did he have any Starlance exp.?
I do not have starlance, Tachyon though.. that was fun.

dredloch and sarpedon do have a point here and i tend to agree: looks like you are just trying to justify that you will not buy the real thing even though you assured us only a short while ago that you actually will buy it.

I honestly preordered the game to buy it. Now I dont think I will. I think getting the Beta was a mixed blessing. If I had a choice again, I would not play the beta. Then again, the beta made me realize that the game is repetitive. Or I just played the game too much! :-(

I think I need a beta copy of Master of Orion 3 now...lol

All games are repetitive, and honestly I know there are gamers out there that do not like open-ended games like this because they feel like once they complete the single player missions or the main storyline, there is no point to going on. I tend to like to play onward just for the fun of doing and seeing everything, and even then I get a certain pleasure from being the most powerful person in the game.

It's unfortunate you came to your conclusion after playing the beta, and I honestly can understand your desire to cancel your preorder. But maybe you should get it anyway and give it as a gift or something, to someone who likes this type of game and isn't so easily bored and distracted.

Besides, you haven't really completed the single player missions, because they only run up to mission 10 in the beta that was released.

Post Wed Feb 19, 2003 5:31 am

Well, certainly the missions LOOK repetitive, but honestly IMHO, i dont care. I dont seem to get tired blasting enemies. It's just fun! And ive been playing this for months, you'd think I would have gotten tired but not me. Just look at Stinger and Mad Dog!!! Each with over 250 HOURS AND STILL playing!!!!!!!

Multiplayer makes this game worthwhile. The freeformness of single player is only recommended if you dont have internet.

I've yet to run into a player in the MP environment that doesn't seme to enjoy it. There's a lot of tricks to the game you just can't learn alone and sharing those tricks enhances the experience.

On TLR server, there's a group of players I see all the time. This means they must be enjoying it or they'd not return. Everyone is certainly entitled to their opinions, Iron Monkey's review is a testament to that. It's honest, it mentioned many points and reads well. Nothing wrong with that at all.

But there's no way in that short of time anyone would be able to absorb all that FL offers. All this time people that got a shot at playing the game from getting a CD from Gamestop...few have mentioned much about the edge worlds and the Broderworlds. I live out there most of the time and there's a reason for that. My style of playing is an explorer first, fighter pilot second, merchant third. I still haven't landed every place possible yet. I found 3 bases I didn't know existed just lately and believe me I've covered what I thought was just about every square inch of the galaxy. And Digital Anvil STILL has some surprises in store no one has seen yet. My stats to date:

155 places landed (I need to fix my rep to land on the rest)
113 unique jump holes mapped (2 never do show as mapped)
284 hours logged (and counting)

I think there's enough content out there to warrent giving the game a chance. By design it starts off slow, but once you get over the hump (ask OMEGA, I got him over the hump 2nite), the game simply sux you in and just doesn't let you go.
