Trade prices

Apologies if I've duped anybody else's post on this, but when running cargo, is it possible to find out what the planets/space stations nearby are paying for what you're carrying without having to land on them first? Namely, can you scout around for the highest price without constantly having land and take off again?

Also, any more word on when the demo is to be available and what we'll be able to do in it? I wasn't lucky enough to win a CD in the MS/TLR compo and living in the UK, we don't have any shops giving away betas. April 11th is a bloody long time away, so I'm desparate to get my hands on any kind of playable code!

AFAIK, if you have landed somewhere once, you get a pricelist in your database with all the prices.
Prices are set on every planet, they dont change.

About the demo, so far only thing known is that its supposed to come out a few days before (US) release.

You mean prices don't fluctuate around Supply and Demand? That's crappy.

Post Sun Feb 16, 2003 10:10 pm

There's still the element of supply and demand but it is more static I think. For instance, at one of the bases you can buy fire arms, some of the near by places will but it but you don't make that much money, but houston will give you a good price for it.

An item can be a different price from base to base, one base will sell the same thing for much less and another base will pay more to buy it.

So you still have to find the places to get good prices and places to sell them for a good price.

It would be nice to be able to affect supply and demand but it would be super hard to keep track of everything.

So prices are static in that a base pays the same amount for each item throughout the entire game. Fair enough, ideal in fact, for a trading addict like me. Just like Priv2 in that respect.

What I'm referring to is this: X-BTF or Xtension had a 'trading computer' you could fit to your ship that allowed you to see a base's price list whilst in flight without you having to land there first, ie. you targeted the base, invoked the trade computer, checked the price and went elsewhere if they weren't paying enough. Does a similar thing exist in Freelancer or do you HAVE to land at a base in order to see what's being paid for a particular commodity?

If you have a certain commodity in your hull, you can click it and info on it will appear along with a list of prices for that commodity from the bases which you have visited before. The price at the top will be your best deal. You dont have to land to check prices, you just have to land to get the prices added to your Neural Net.

So lemme get this straight, whenever you land at a base, that base's prices are added to the Neural Net for the rest of the game, along with price lists for every other base you've visited.

You click on stuff in your cargo bay and the window displays a list of prices for that item ranked in order of profitability and I assume listing the destination. Cool!

Say I've landed and I'm browsing the commodities for sale at at a particular base and I spot something that seems dirt cheap and a definite earner. Can I lookup the prices for that commodity I've got stored in my Neural Net from other bases there and then before I buy it to see if it would be a wise buy? I guess in a nutshell, what I'm saying is 'can I look through the prices I've got stored for a particular item at any time without having to buy that item first'?

Sorry to be a pain in the arse.

Yes, you dont have to buy the commodity first.

as for the demo part--i read that PC GAMER(UK) will have one in next months issue--of course i could of read it wrong

It's possible dynamic commodity prices made it into the final version. So don't get too disappointed at the moment. We'll just have to wait and see. Even if there isn't dynamic prices, there's still like over 3000 routes to run.

Post Mon Feb 17, 2003 1:29 am

i think it would be cool if dynamic prices were put in, otherwise you would always run the same routes

You wouldn't necessarily. Depending upon where you were and where you were headed to, you might pick up different goods. But I agree, dynamic commodities is something I really hope made it into the final version.

I've got $20 that says dynamic prices will not make it into the game. Personally I don't mind either way, the static system will save you from doing to much running around trying to find a good price but that dynamic pricing will force you to look for other profitable routes if the one you have dies. Personally though I fully intend to look for the most profitable trade route in the galaxy, rather than just sit on a mediocre one.

Static prices would be good if the following are true:

1)Demand commodities are located far from the stations that need them

2) Stations that give medium to low-high prices for certain commodities are well spread out.

Dynamic prices would stretch the game out very far, providing a great many number of hours just searching for the right price once your former route has enough stock of the commodity you were selling.

I'm just afraid that Freelancer will put too much weight on combat and too less weight on trading. At least every so often i wanna make a simple trading run without being attacked by some pirates. Hm... maybe being a pirate friendly trader would solve this issue

On the other hand i hope being just friendly with the pirates doesn't result in continuous attacks by police forces instead. I want calm trading flights and enjoy the scenery when i want to. I hope that ain't too much to ask.
