The Adventure Model

The moderator told me "one last chance to redeem myself". This is it. I've taken a hard look at the situation and realized I was wrong. The "joystick debate" is a symptom of a deeper misunderstanding, which ultimately ends for me with a much deeper understanding of what Freelancer is and of what Privateer was. Call it "The Adventure Model."

When I see Privateer, I don't see its evolutionary history: I don't see an interactive movie, I see Elite with cinematics. Whatever misplaced disappointment surrounds Freelancer stems from this misunderstanding. A lot of Privateer fans are very excited about Freelancer, and I finally understand why: all this time I've been all about "flight model" this and "trade model" that and I totally ignored the "adventure model".

I realize now what Freelancer is, and how it descends from Privateer. All roads paved by Chris Roberts lead toward interactive movies eclipsing "air combat in space" as the central theme. His projects have been moving that direction since Wing Commander 2. FL is surely the pinnacle of this evolution and the finest example of its genre ever made.

X2 takes the opposite evolutionary path from Privateer 2 and Freelancer: it's all about flying around, with realistic flight models and full flight controls and realistic trade models and complex adaptive chaos models -- the works -- and if you want you can fulfill some "secondary tasks" (in case you missed it that's the "adventure" part.) Ok, I'm exaggerating to prove a point, but you get the point.

FL will have breathtaking movies, theater-like sound, perfectly-cast voice talent, a gripping storyline, and tons of interactive content. It will be Raiders of the Lost Ark in space, as the adventurer searches for clues to the greatest mystery of the universe: what happened to Earth? And of course that adventurer is you!

It would seem Privateer left shoes to fill that were so big it takes two great games to fill them. The evolutionary path that X2 took with respect to Privateer isn't the "correct" path, it's just a different one, and it isn't what "WE" need ... it's what I need. Mea culpa.

I understand now why so many of you are looking forward to Freelancer ... it sounds like it will be a thrilling experience.

I'm going to look for an X2 board, but not without optimism for Freelancer. When X2 finally cures those Privateer-pilot withdrawal cravings, I will buy a copy of Freelancer and return to this board as one of you: a Privateer-adventurer. A true Privateer fan wouldn't dare miss the opportunity!

Awesome Aye Capn. That's as good a statement of the fundamental continuity as any.

WAY too deep for me...a game is a way to escape a little bit from reality. I don't try to break it down into "models" or "flight modes" - way too much thinking about a game (imho). Privateer looked fun from the previews -so I played it, FL looks fun from the previews -gonna play it. This is not a life decision.

Amen!

Impressive, very impressive. But.......I can't think of a way to end that sentence.

Seriously, that is quite insightful, and has helped me understand this game some more (as I am VERY new).

I do what I must, when I must...

Bravo, Aye Capn, that was a very insightfull post.

Good post Aye Capn

You have indeed seen the "real" appeal of Freelancer for me and I am sure many other Privateer fans. I am looking forward to your future posts.

Pretty deep... ANd yes, FL tries not to be a realistic, complex simulation but more towards a fun game.

I think DA achived the right balance, and try the demo in a few weeks!

When I looked a little deeper into X2 I knew I had "come home" so to speak. That's truly where I belong, and many of you had said as much during the time I spent here.

I didn't consider X2 a "serious contender" because I saw a web page which talked about X2 but which was filled with screen shots of the previous version, X, which was released way back in like 1998. Oops.

When someone tells you, "Go find something else," and you don't think there IS something else, it can be a little frustrating. Now that I've seen the real X2 what you guys said makes a lot of sense -- luckily there is something out there for everyone. It also gave me newfound appreciation for Privateer.

Heh, I thought I was out of here for good and everyone goes soft on me, telling me I oughtta stick around ... okay, I think I can come up with something we have in common: we share the experience of having to WAIT to get the goods -- X2 isn't out yet, either. How could one game (Privateer) be so addicting that 6 years later we're still biting our nails? Why can't we be blissfully unaware of release dates until the day before the release date?

"Freelancer has gone Gold" ... wow, I understand how you guys feel now, going nuts knowing that it's ready but that you can't have it yet. I would be climbing the walls.

Not long for me Aye Capn. About 2 weeks. Considering I been waiting for over 6 years....2 weeks is a piece of cake. Oh by the way...I liked X-Beyond the Frontier. I played all the way thru and won it. It had certain things about it I really liked. Not up to par with Privateer...but a good game anyway. I enjoyed my time in it.

I have to agree with "DVX Being." In the end its only a game that provides a bit of distraction from reality (IMHO).

Your post touched a string in my soul... I feel a bit sad .

Troll? he could prove his point of view! (I can imagine some geek who bought HOTAS for space sims and then he reads about Freelancer )
Let's all foget that and celebrate .
