Yet another question...

GREETINGS!
A follow-up to my previous combat question in my intro thread.
Again directed to those with the luck (grr....) to have received the beta:
Is combat "advanced" (YAY! With barrel rolls and much cool stuff) or "simple" (BOO! Lock on and shoot only)?

As you can probably tell by now, I'm gonna spend A LOT of time in the dangerous areas.

That is, once I find that Titan
I will, however, probably end up

You'll eventually get sick of me and my questions.

I do what I must, when I must...

i have seen the videos (you should download Tachyon's if you want to see combat) and it isn't simple point and lock/ shoot but i don't know if you can do rolls and stuff

Post Fri Feb 14, 2003 6:43 am

Maybe I should restate that: The rolls would be nice, but are unnecessary.
As long as it's more than just lock on and fire, I will again be satisfied.

Wonderfully helpful people here

Yah, and that engine-kill-spin-turn move.

Post Fri Feb 14, 2003 4:10 pm

Some maneuvers you and your AI hostiles will be doing:

Engine kill: Allows you to fly in same direction, and shoot in another.
Reverse engines: Brings you to a stop instantly and actually throws you back a bit, in hopes the enemy will overshoot you and he will move in front of you.
Afterburn slide: Combination of reaching full speed with thrusters and then killing the engines, sending you flying away at a high rate of speed.
Strafing: Either to help you turn faster or dodge shots, you WILL be doing this.
Asteroid combat: Cut your engines behind an asteroid and strafe to the side, shoot missiles/guns, slide back into your cover and let them get closer.
Another engine kill maneuver: If you have to destroy a static target and you're taking a lot of damage, kill your engines and use your thrusters to keep you moving in a circular or square pattern around the target, at high speeds. You can blast away and will avoid hits more than you would with standard hit-and-run techniques.

Just some I could think of off the top of my head

And contrary to popular belief by many that have witnessed this... flying upside down does have it's advantages. Especially in a ship that looks about the same inverted as upright. When most everyone else forgets to turn off the autoleveling, you're at an advantage, even with NPC's. I wish I had a telephoto lens to take a picture of the confuzed faces when I straff up and down or diagonally instead of left to right. Tricks of the trade.

Thought I saw in another thread that there was no 'roll' on FL. So what's the mechanism for non autolevelling flight then ?

Asteroid combat: Cut your engines behind an asteroid and strafe to the side, shoot missiles/guns, slide back into your cover and let them get closer.

Cool... reminds me of my AH-64D Longbow days. The good o' bop-up maneuver, just in space.

I hope there are some really huge asteroids (without bases in it), not just the rather small ones i saw in some videos.

With autoleveling turned on (which is done be default every time you launch from anywhere), you're bascially "somewhat" kept on the same general line of flight as everyone else. The way this works is simple, turn and the autoleveling brings you back to a position that keep your line of sight the same all the time. Turn it off and when you turn you completely control your line of sight. Real pilots are familiar with the use of a gyroscope? With autoleveling off if you had one in your cockpit while flying FL you can throw that puppy out the window because it would be tumbling all the time anyway. Autoleveling on kind of forces your ship to right itself so the white part of the gyroscope is always in the upper half, the dark side in always in the lower half.

To turn it off, the default key is "L" in case you wanted to know.

Yes, i wanted to know that. I was afraid you could only deactivate autoleveling in the options menu. Good to know that it's a regular and easy to reach ship function.
