Missions and NPC Spacecraft

I have a couple of questions, one of which was sort of answered in the excellent FAQ, but I want to be more sure of, and another that is probably dumb but I would like to find out anyway.

The first is concerning the random mission generator. According to the FAQ, there seems to be one, and it relies on your ship type etc, but I'm wondering if this is similar to the Privateer random mission generator which seemed (to me at the time anyway) to have limitless random missions to run. Does the Freelancer random mission generator have limitless missions to give out? And if I have a merchant ship, will the missions be along the lines of "transport commodity A to station B" and if I have a fighter craft will they be "destroy ship A, B, and C at location D?" Also, are random missions determined by your reputation with certain factions? If I have a good reputation with bounty hunters but bad with the police and navy, will I get bounty-type missions?

The second question concerns NPC Spacecraft. Is there a finite number? Meaning, can I completely decimate the entire population of the universe until there are no more ships? Or will they randomly keep appearing after I kill them? It seems to me (I could be wrong) that if you are slaughtering merchant ships in a certain sector, the bounty hunter or police presence will increase, or pirates will increase. Do they come from other sectors or just spawn in that area due to your actions?

I am totally looking forward to this game, and I'm just a bit curious about these pieces of it. One thing I hope made it in is dynamic commodity prices and trading. But even if it doesn't the game will still rock my world. Thanks in advance for reading and responding.

it would be cool to have a finite amount of law enforcement, but you can't destroy everything at once that involves storyline plot etc...
however you should take into consideration that more people will be recruited into the Navy, so in a sense they will never really DISSAPEAR from the system.

Welcome Sarpedon!

There are several thousand random missions, not infinite, but certainly plenty. Now, the missions are relatively simple, and are based on four concepts. There are no merchant runs in the missions, but you certainly can run merchandise as much as you wish, it's just in the "freeform" part of the game. You have to go to bars to get missions, and you can only land at planets or stations which are at least neutral. To get missions, you can't be hostile or neutral-hostile with the faction which runs the base.

You can't wipe out the entire Sirius Sector. You can certainly try, and it's a lot of fun doing that, but there will always be plenty of NPC's around. The universe created in the game is just much too big to be able to get everyone.
