Freelancer like game (Space Commando - working title)

Hi all!

It's been a while since my last post on these forums, mainly because I got so tired of Freelancer (or more like all those stupid limitations in the game), you can play it only for that long. Anyway, I've had two servers running and there was a bunch of very nice people playing on them, thanks a lot for that.

The reason for posting here now is that I'm working on a game for a game development competition and my goal is to combine a space sim and a first person shooter. Obviously I will keep things as simple as possible, I'm not trying to do Freelancer meets Doom3 here.

Now after working on the game for about 1.5 months and way too many hours of my free time (read: all of them ) I've started to think more about the space sim part of my game and how great Freelancer was when I played it. I still have the game installed and I've launched it a few times to get some ideas for the space sim part of my game. In my opinion Freelancer is the best space sim ever made and I wanted to make something (even remotely) similar.

What I'm trying to do:
- Space scenes with asteroids, space stations, planets, stars and ships
- Space combat
- Space station interiors
- First person combat
- Mission based game play (not just killing everything, but for example stealing military plans and such in space or inside enemy installations/ships)

The idea is that the players can fly around in their ships, then dock on the stations and explore them.

I've already implemented a extremely simple space scene with a few objects and Freelancer like mouse controls. Now I've been busy with the level editor to make these scenes.

Then (finally) the reason why I decided to post here:
I need 3D models. Simple as that. There's a a lot of cool models in Freelancer (which I obviously cannot use in my game) and in the mods made for it.

I cannot model myself, even if my life depends on it, so I'm asking if someone who has made models for FL mods could spare a model or two for my project.

Here's a link to my project site: http://www.projectminiverse.com/

Screenshots (mostly of the editing tools I'm developing for the game): http://www.projectminiverse.com/site?node_id=5

The (old) design document is here: http://www.projectminiverse.com/site?node_id=22

You can download a simple test scene here: http://www.projectminiverse.com/preview ... 7_v006.rar and in case you have problems with the executables, here's two more to try out: http://www.projectminiverse.com/preview ... erTest.rar

I have enough experience in software projects (been running my own company and being the lead developer for 10 years, I'm just a hobbyist game developer though) to NOT think that I'll make a game like Freelancer (but BETTER of course!) in a few months.

The long time plan for my game engine is to make another game after the competition has finished (in next June) and it will probably be some sort of multiplayer space sim.

I will be moving this to off topic as this particular forum is a freelancer forum. This will give you time to catch this message.

Wow. Very OpenLancer-like. Meh. More games are always good

Competition rules?

Openlancer could always use another sister project to help start the game/mod forge site. I'm trying to build a large community digital asset repository and coordinate middleware development. If you can work with LGPL and creative commons licenses your welcome to join in.

For Openlancer itself, we are trying to build Freelancer meets Battlefield 2142 (no demons), only better.

Finalday:
Sorry for the offtopic, but I was not sure where to put this as it's at least remotely related to Freelancer.

BTW, is it normal that when I try to reply I have to always type my username/password and I don't seem to be able to quote text from the message I'm replying to?

Competition rules for this year can be seen here: http://www.pascalgamedevelopment.com/co ... etails&c=3

Honestly, I was not even aware of such a project as OpenLancer.

About the sister project etc. Well, I can't work with LGPL nor CCL because my game engine uses proprietary code (some owned by my company and some by others). Besides, my programmin language of choice is Object Pascal (Delphi for Win32, Lazarus for Linux/MacOS, yes my game engine is designed to work across different platforms) and I absolutely hate C++.

So that kind of kills that idea.

I just need to get content for my project (3D models, textures, audio etc.) and that's why I posted here. I thought that people might be interested in this sort of thing...
