I am kind of curious, is there anyone here who has messed with a game known as Battlecruiser 3000?? It is rather close to Freelancer, though I never did get "into it" because I found the amount of time needed to learn it was somewhat tedious, if not outright boring. The initial release of the first few installments were so buggy that they were basically unplayable here in the U.S. It has been Several years now, and much of the crap (bugs) that killed it has been fixed. Upgraded modern editions have made it an even more desirable game.....It has graphics, ships and a lot of other items that I thought were very striking in similarity to FL, best of all BC3000 and its sequel the Millineum edition are free for download (WITH permission of the releasing company!). I am wondering if the various modders and programmers couldn't take a hint or two (ships/technology etc) from this overly complex game (IMHO) and import them into Freelancer . Since there have been other imports from Star Wars, Star Trek, Babylon 5 etc. I really don't see a problem....and yet no one seems to have even taken a look inside this games files. The "data" folder has .ini files strikingly similar to FL....Have a look!!...there is some of the really cool stuff that would probably fit into the FL universe real well (lots of fresh ideas here).
I'll take a look at it for OL. We still have some lose ends and rough spots in the design.

Thanks for a reply Megaburn, I hope others will take a look as well. For anyone who may be curious about what I have been looking at the web address is- http://www.3000ad.com/home.shtml The games-Bc3000 and the Millenium Edition are free....Simply click on the what you want in the "downloads" section. Warning: they are LARGE files (over 100 150+meg) so those that are limited to 52 baud connections probably need some time to spare. I still stay away from the game because it is not NEARLY as friendly as FL to play (IMHO) even though my friends have said it is superior to FL because it also incorporates 3d ground combat. Also, for certain reasons, the forums over there are not a place I would want to be...I will let it go at that. Don't get me wrong though, the games guts (by the looks of it) could be used as an incredible resource for FL.

The requirements for the older version probably VERY few. I would stick with the Millenium edition. Still, it might be worth a look. If I am not mistaken the older version was based on DOS.
Here are the requirements for the enhanced Millenium Edition which I have been looking at (sorry I didn't post 'em earlier)
Minimum Requirements
· WIN 98/ME/2K/XP (with all service packs)
· DirectX 8.1b or higher
· Pentium II 300Mhz or AMD K6-2 350Mhz processor
· 64 MB RAM (128MB minimum for WIN 2K/XP)
· 16MB DirectX 8 compliant 3D graphics card
· 16Bit DirectX 8 compliant sound card
· 8X CDROM or DVD-ROM
· 500MB uncompressed hard drive disk space
· Microsoft compatible mouse
Recommended Requirements
· Pentium III 500Mhz or equivalent AMD processor
· 128 MB RAM
· 32MB DirectX 8 compliant 3D graphics card with TnL
· DirectX 8 compliant Joystick
Multiplayer Requirements
· No multiplayer

The reviews for this are right on the mark. The entire series make up some of the most difficult games to get into ever created. Also Battlecruiser 3000AD will not install on winxp, its win9x only. I played Battlecruiser Millennium for about five hours and kind of got the hang of it, but it still wasn't fun. The overall experience was somewhere between a waste of time and simply painful.
I was going to get Universal Combat but when I checked around the 3000AD forums I noticed multiple instances of unnecessarily hostile interaction between company staff and players. Its seems they treat paying customers as little more than an annoyance and when someone says something they don't like it turns to open hostility.
Example: In one thread they were looking for feedback on improving the shooter mode, the replies were all on topic and most were fairly well thought out, “blatantly useful” feedback. It was a mix of a little game design theory, some constructive criticism, and some abstracted suggestions (i.e. pointedly non-critical). The admin running the discussion threatened to ban the people posting constructive criticism saying they were off topic and if they don't like the game they can go play something else. Then he goes on a rant about how players are stupid, ignorant, and not worth listening to.
I'm not sorry to say the Openlancer Project will not be looking to the BC/UC series for inspiration, on any level. Its not even useful as an example of how not to doing things. I'm surprised this is a commercial outfit and really surprised its still in business after a decade, but they shouldn't be surprised they just lost a half dozen sales (at least).

I'm glad you found out about the BC series before you wasted your money, and it is nowhere/anything like FL. It is closer to X series if you like the X series you'll love BC IMO because they both suck when it comes to game play itself.
