Im hearing rumours that MS will shut down GS at the end of this year. Is this true or its just some false speculation?
I have no idea, but it could possible as freelancer is getting dead old=it's 4 years old and that's a while.

I've heard rumours that they were making Freelancer 2, stealing work from modders to make the game (these were cast iron solid rumours mind, none of that chinese whispers stuff!) etc etc.
Rumours are called rumours for a reason - because they have no substance or fact to them. If they do, then it's not a rumour.

If they are, alot of people who remember it would, well, remember it. But probs not buy it because of their fancy-schamcy games and X-box. If they do shutdown, there gunna have to answer to some people. But, 1, they have the right two, well, that is to be debated, and two, running a big game server can be expensive, even tho microsoft needs more money like it needs a hole in their heads.
They will pull it when the player base becomes low enough to warrant its removal, at the moment around 800 players play online at any one time when that shortens to around 400 then i guess they may pull the plug and state the player base was shortening so they removed it. Which of course would give them an excuse for such an action.
Sign a pettion of 400 people? scouring servers for signing it? and fan sites like us submitting it all. Then they will hear our cry!!!! Forward Comrades!!! but, wait, you think Microsoft is going to spend X amount of money a year so that us guys can play it? but then again, they might have to, with a little trick up our selevs called, the media. And, we could go to enviormentlists, tell em about gainians? that might double our votes, to, 800! But i guess without a petioton or media support, its only a matter of time. What if we wrote a letter to Microsoft and asked how long theyll keep it up. i mean, if they dont answer, im sure there going to send a letter to TLR that is going down, like they did when they global was down. But im sure you could probs still play on lan, just have to have a million IP adresses.
Ye, thats a brilliant idea!

MS will drop support for FL in April 08. I doubt they'll discontinue global server support before then. If they did then it would only flood them with support requests.
Microsoft Freelancer Lifecycle
For those wanting MS to release the FL source code, count on it not happening before April 08 if it happens at all.
Patitions and email are a waste of time. MS isn't going to be "pestered" into doing anything and we simply don't have the numbers to impress them.
EDIT: If someone wants to put together a new global server, take a look at RakNet. We're using it in Openlancer pretty much all networking. If FL can be patched to add a hook for a RakNet network wrapper then a new global server should be easy to setup. From there hosting it is the main issue. Maybe after TLR gets the new server the old one can be used for a new global server (kind of fitting given the hosting arrangement). If anyone wants to work on this jump on the Openlancer Project, we have a couple people familiar with RakNet. I think a few of the guys at =EOA= are the only people still active in the community with the know how to patch FL like that.
