I seem to remember an old version of the Freelander intro floating around, the one where the nomands attack Earth. I wanted to have another look at it, but I cant find it anywhere. Cant find it using the site search engine, or even google for that matter. Any ideas as to where I can find it?
It's also in the downloads section here:

Wow! I never saw that one. I really do think that Freelancer was going to be a lot bigger then what we have today. I'm going to say that the Nomad ship in that intro was not just a battleship, but also maybe something a lot more powerful. DA might have had plans to have that big ship blow a planet or planets up instead we got Freeport 7 and 3 Nomad fighters. On the other hand, maybe something later in the game. Because I feel that the last 4 Missions were just ran together and bang it's over. That intro has a lot more content that DA might have added, but was unable to because of time constraints. My God, can you imagine what kind of game we might have had if they were allowed to finish?

Unfortunately, I dont play Freelancer too much any more, as I cant escape that feeling that it could have been so much better. Especially after digging out my old copy of Starlancer and playing through it again. I mean, why the hell did the Alliance lose? How? I think that, even though Freelancer is meant to be after the Alliance - Coalition conflict, the developer's ambitions made them lose touch the Starlancer storyline. It was, after all, supposed to mirror WW2. Perhaps thats why this nomad-attack story was cancelled, the developers thought it too radical and unbelievable, that the Starlancer community wouldnt buy it? Or maybe, as we all suspect, Microsoft were just pushing them too hard.....
The original concept for Freelancer was to have a lot more, such as ground vehicles and interaction on planets, large ships, a better HUD, better ship interior and much more.
I have some screenshots from the beta and it does have vehicles, highways, gates and other goodies.
Thing is, it was in development for 4 years and Digital Anvil was running short on cash so when Microsoft offered to step in they accepted the offer and Microsoft must have decided that it had been in production long enough.
Too bad because Freelancer could of been the most amazing game on the planet... It is an great the way it is but who knows what could of been.

Can't help but think that the "rush job" in the end worked very much toward creating this very gathering. If FL Vanilla had been a more finished article would the same amount of mods aiming to finish it properly have come about? Would this community of modders, editors, and dabblers in different versions still be talking 4 years after the original?
I never knew they wanted ground combat or any of that stuff....its a shame they were over-ambitious, the downfall of so many developers. Without the evil corporate publisher stepping in, and a proper, accomplishable plan, this could have been one awesome game. I know modders can carry on with this and adapt it, improve it. But its still within the basic concept of Freelancer, and you'll never complete what it could have been....
On a side note, is that Openlancer project still going? Their forums seem dead, and since I came up with the main characters name, I'd be interested in how they're doing

Openlancer is still alive and kicking. Actually its very interesting to know DA wanted ground combat for FL. OL will include ground combat but we're still having issues with procedurally generated planet terrain (e.g. the hold up in releasing a tech demo to rally everyone's support).
In a nutshell, right now the general planning process is almost done, technical detail is slowly being added, most of the game engine is outlined, BP helped us resolve the copyright issue, and we're about to submit a news post to basically say "Openlancer is still alive". A tech demo is in the works and will be released at some point soon.
...BP, know of anything else DA was planning to do that got cut? Like major things OL can try to tackle?

I'll agree that it is much better than what we got in the final game. But, it spoiles the end of the game IMO. The first time watching the final game introduction, I didn't even notice what came out and attacked Freeport 7. I only noticed it when I was looking for it, after I beat the game.

Does openlancer have any new upcoming trailers to D/L say within the next 3-6 months
Hopefully yes, but school is coming around and development has slowed. The real problem is we have no one supporting us, we're simply trying to push forward with the few members we have.
@BP Is there a way that I can D/L that trailer not just play it?
Provided your using internet explorer, you can right-click the link and hit "Save Target As..." to save the file to your hard disk.
