Modernizing the FL engine would only need a hand full of programmers working on it for a couple months or maybe longer depending on the extent of the overhaul. Its something any FL fan should be interested in trying no matter what other games are available.

Thats basically the issue with Openlancer. I'm trying to get a formal community referendum from TLR management on using the Lancers canon with a fan fiction claim -vs- creating a new canon. Then I'll try to motivate as many people as possible to work on it. I'm not sure how many active users we have left on here but I'm assuming its several hundred. If they really want to see a FL sequel created then they need to step forward to make it happen. Starting with a new canon if necessary, new storylines, fleshing out the game world, and as many graphics assets as they want to create. Once a final decision is made on whether or not a new canon should be created I think things will pick up a little.

The problem with trying to attract fans of other game genres is they're less likely to really take an interest in FL and OL. EVE sure, but not BF2 (SW BF2 maybe) or WOW. OL has a cross section of game play modes so its more likely to appeal to anyone interested in futuristic scifi set in space. FL is still a pretty narrow focus on space flight combat and I'm not sure new game play modes could be added with an FL engine overhaul.

Another problem with bringing in new people from other genres is it will split the community. Right now the bulk of the people visiting TLR are FL fans. The same exact group of people needed to work on OL. This is especially true if the community has to create a new canon. New people coming in from EVE, BF2, or WOW might be able to add interesting points of view but they don't know the Lancers canon and cannot create a new canon with the same spirit or feel that the FL canon has. It doesn't make much difference in terms of game play, that will be roughly the same as FL plus some new game play modes, doesn't matter who's working on it since FL fans outlined the bulk of the design (Evolutions fans specifically).

I've also seen some pretty heated debates over minor differences in opinion on the FL storyline and the canon. If people came in from outside of the community to work on the storyline I think the forums would erupt in massive debates. From what I heard some sort of massive argument broke out on here a couple years ago and the fallout from it is still having some lingering effects on the community now. I'm hoping the people still active on here can set their differences side to make sure a FL sequel becomes a reality. I wouldn't expect the same from people who are new and may not have played FL.
