Per our admin retired,

There are a few tools that one MIGHT use to make a joystick work in Freelancer:

Joystick mapping to keyboard:

Joystick mapping to mouse:

However, the mouse is actualy easyer.

I've always thought that it would theoretically be possible to use a JS in FL through the use of coding the data through DirectInput. The only problem is how to get FL to recognise the JS.

i personally have nothing against the mouse EXCEPT that there is no choise between the mouse or the joystick

A choice *would* have been nice as I feel that a JS is more responsive and tactile. Still, I think that the mouse control works very well in FL. The only thing is that it makes the game feel a little like an FPS, which is not necessarily a bad thing .

A choice would have been good, as I have a brilliant JS. But the mouse has me hooked, and my joystick is presently collecting dust in the cupboard...waiting for the next game with a joystick I buy.

Joystick control is possible, just impractical. Using the tools of the almighty Bargib and the first edition of the 'Roll Baby Roll' mod I was able to pull this off, though it was a bit touchy and difficult to do. Needless to say, dogfighting was a bit of a problem. Being a long time die hard joystick fan this is hard for me to admit, but mouse actually works better for this. Give it a shot though. Maybe I just didn't configure everything properly, it was somewhat of a rush job.

I do think Digital Anvil did not include joystick support because mouse players would most likely have an advantage over joystick users in PvP. I also think mostly anything related to precision would be tough with a joystick.
