I have a few space sim games but I must say that Freelancer has most of them whipped hands down...even if it's only mouse and keyboard control.
In recent months, I've delved into modeling and modding this game and I must say, the potential for this is hard to believe.
Seeing where there is so much that was intentionally or unintentionally left out..or edited out...this is one incredible game that just keeps on ticking.
There are "hidden" treasures to be found within the game itself that have yet to be unlocked and added.
Where would Freelancer 2 go with this?
I can envision a story revolving around a comeback of the nomads. This time, it follows a scheme that involves the original pre-release video.
Sure, modders can change things....but why? What's the use of a more powerful gun, or mine, or shield? What is the point of being "uber" when it takes away our right to be vulnerable and able to fight back against the odds?
What could be more challenging to a team of players on a server than to fight a desparate battle against incredible odds against the one enemy that was always the central focal point of the Freelancer story?
Freelancer is not Star Wars, it is not Star Trek, it is not Babylon 5......
In its pure form, it's none of those at all...even though we can add to it to make it appear as such.
Although it can accomodate "clans"...it isn't about interclan warfare or system takeovers, or base ownership. It is about the nomads and our struggle against them.
Originally, in Starlancer, we fought each other. In the pre-release of Freelancer, we fought against each other until the nomads came into the picture.
In Freelancer, the focal point of the story is the nomads...despite intersystem squabbles and conflicts with the resident criminal elements.
Even the "criminal elements" were those who stood with us in the fight against the nomads when we finally made our way to Dyson City. (The voices alone of the Order indicate this).
I would have the nomads make a comeback and bring their mother ship with them.
I created a "destroyed" solar system with only two rocky outposts and Pluto as it's only planet. For fun, I placed Deep Space Engineering, the Junkers and the Liberty Rogues all together in that system. NOT ONE shot was fired between them at each other...but instead they patrolled the system and defended it from area nomads. I saw them work together against the nomads...even against the odds. I was surprised at this turn of events.
AI are incredibly interesting.
Okay...I'm getting off of my soap box now.
