I heard this kinda trick alot, but then in the way of yust turning and going to your enemy.
However i fly backwards maybe i do it wrong or maybe its a side affect but i do this i first use my afterbuners till maximum speed, hit Z and make a complete circel, then i am flying backwords at a speed of 180 if i do it good. + without wasting the cruise energy ( or how you call it ).
This is nice for escaping combat as i have noticed the enemy dont uses his afterburners to chase me! I find it a nice trick.
I dont got much time and i would like to know the answer on this so sorry if this has been posted before.

Well, doing what you said provoques a bug I have no idea why.

It makes the NPCs stop chasing, stop their engines, and ignore you whenever you're out of their fireing range.

And no it's not to keep "cruise energy", it's simply not to get cruise disrupted
