From what I can see here, you folks don't know about (or just haven't talked about yet) the other uses of torpedos. In the end, I'd have to say that the cruise disruptor is a much more valuable use of that hardpoint, but, of course, torpedos are much more fun. One thing about torpedos, the "maximum range" rating in the infocard is inconsequential. I have hit targets with torpedos unmodded from up to 17k away. The process is very simple. Select a target from your scanner list, be it station, battleship, etc. Point your ship directly towards it, ideally at least 10 K away or so ('go to' is helpful for this), and engage cruise. As soon as you reach full power, hit engine kill, put your reticle on the target, and fire away. Throttle down immediately to avoid going too near the target. Remember, at such high speed, the torpedo cannot guide itself, so you must remember to have your ship pointed directly at the target. This method can also be used with the thruster, though at a shorter range, 5-7 K. This allows you to get battleships during the storyline much easier, and speeds up the painfully slow process of sitting for hours waiting for torps to impact.
Also, consider using your torpedos in dogfights. The AI has a tendancy to circle far out, then charge you head on. Launch torps right before they pass you (get their shields down first) and they'll more than likely be toast. This is useful to turn the tide in a heavily outmatched fight.
