Has anyone tried this possible turret mode tactic??

I've had a thought and a search of the boards does not seem to reveal this particular tactic.

We've all complained about how one cannot maneouver and use turret mode simultaneously. So what if you did this....

First make sure you're in a battle with an ally (a.i. or otherwise) or two. Target him and enter formation with him. While in formation with your buddy enter turret mode and blast away. This way your ship will still maneouver in the battle area - since your in formation with another ship in the battle - and you can use your turrets to your heart's content. Of course if your buddy gets toasted, you'd need to exit turret mode and find another one or change tactics.

Any reason why this wouldn't work???

If you're flying a frieghter, you better know how to use turret mode. When I have bogeys chasing me while I'm in a frieghter, I go right to turret mode, facing backward the whole time until I've wiped them out.

Well, I tried it. I took my trusty Rhino to the Badlands and entered formation with the nearest Defender. We soon spotted some Rogues and off we went. I was able to enter turret mode while in formation but there are two problems:
1. you have to be prepared to deal with unpredictable course changes
2. sometimes your ship will enter cruise mode to catch up to your wingman

Also you're a bit of a sitting duck for missles for some reason. You can countermeasure pretty effectively though.

never enter formation with your father when his in a sabre and your in a defender.
