Played it, loved it, and now...??? What game gives the same feeling like Fl...storyline, enough things to explore on your own, all the choices you can make....tried freespace2, but it's just shooting and fighting...
I like X2 The Threat, it is kind of similar to Freelancer, ie it is a game where you pilot a ship in space and do trade to advance...differences:
- Freelancer has generally a better plot and a more action oriented storyline, X2 takes a bit to get going (X2 cut scenes are BAD compared to Freelancers lol)
- In X2 you can build factories and own a fleet of ships, mainly that is the big difference, X2 is economy orienated where you build an empire, Freelancer is more action oriented focussed on blowing things up. The X2 approach can be cumbersome with the in-game menus...how patient are you?
- Both games have great graphics, tho X2 has (IMO) better graphics - its engine is after all a year or so newer.
But it is personal pref. There are loads of reviews out there.
Also, if you haven't tried em the Freespace games are great, getting on now but still darned good.
[Please don't flame me for posting this Freelancer fans, I am hoping I don't seem like an X2 fanboy.

Don't worry, pixel. My fellow TLR-ers and I will hardly rip your head off for liking games other than Freelancer. Woe betide the one who simply disses FL though. Nomad infestation is preferable to what we would do.
As far as answering the original question...I have no idea. As far as I can tell Freelancer has a pretty much one of a kind blend of graphics, story and gameplay. X2 may work for you but it does hav a rather sttep learining curve and you can get bogged down in the minutae of the game. Don't let that discourage you though. Ultimately I'd recommend downloading some mods and experiencing online play (if you can).

No, the storyline is hardcoded, there are ways of shutting it of, but I haven't seen any mods with full new storylines.
I might be wrong though.

It's possible to develop a new storyline... it's just been a low priority for modders. We've been busy with the fundamentals- building working content, better MP game-balance, and the like. And this is likely to continue to be the case- building a new storyline that didn't suck would have to involve a lot of cutscenes, and without the tools that DA used (or equivalents) it'd be awfully hard... doing animations by manually specifying joint rotations and vertex positions, for example, is a royal pain.
So, it's not likely that we'll ever see a SP experience that's new. MP, on the other hand... even if it's just "MP on my computer only"... is something else again There are literally hundreds of mods- some good, some OK, and a few that are awful in between. Most of them are at least interesting, and add a lot to the game's longevity on our HDs

There are simply not many space sims being made anymore. The market is flooded with FPS and RPG's, but that's what the public wants and buys, so those are the games that are made. Two suggestions which are not space sims but flying games are Crimson Skies (if you can still find it) and any of the Combat Flight Simulators. And, going back a long ways, there's always the original Rogue Squadron from Star Wars. Dated, but fun to play.

Tachyon: The Fringe was my fav til FL came along, it uses j0ysticks too!
The webv site for it is gone, it was a '99 game. Maybe a serch may turn up the demo somewhere?
A bit too old for bargain bins even, but ya never know I just picked up a Starlancer
for $2 a little while ago. Maybe buy on Ebay? Trust me, if you like sticks AND Freelancer
it's worth searching for TTF.
