You want to learn as much as possible about Freelancer? Explore. If you see a base, go dock there. Talk to people in the bar, read what they have to say and take it all on board. Read info (F9) on various things you see while flying around. There's a ton of back story to the game that you can find. People will offer you information about secret bases and jumpholes. If you have the money, you may as well take them up on their offer, if you haven't already found it. Look in the Spoiler forum for many threads concerning events in FL's story. Good examples are the "8 sleeper ships thread" at the top and the Dallas Incident thread. If you want to know about anything particular, ask about it! There are a lot of good people on this site who'll be only to happy to help.

EDIT: just realised you could be talking about learning about FL as a game rather than as a story, that's no problem either

If you're looking to understand the world of freelancer better, you need to start reading rumors. If you want to improve your skills, you need to duel more. Find a friend on a server.

They pretty much covered the story...

As far as learning about the game goes, you should definatly pay attention in the first mission, because it will explain about the controls and stuff. Other than that, PRACTICE! That is important, just as it is with anything else. The more time you spend on the game, the better pilot you will become.
I also have a handy guide on piloting and gameplay tips and tricks. Post back if you want me to email it to you.

Enjoy the game!

Why did kamikaze pilots wear helmets?
Why do people who know the least know it the loudest?

Yea that would be great. Do you think the multiplayer is better then SP? Do you have any tips on a career choice?

Here's the best tip you'll ever get in FL both s/p and m/p ; Don't bite off more than you can chew! If you have a hard time with Xenos and Bounty hunters don't pick fights with anybody else til you can slap them around with impunity. Also whatever ship you fly make sure it can dish out as much as possible. You'll never survive certain areas in a Starflier no matter how good you are.

I will send you the guide in a few minutes. Enjoy it! It helped me a lot when I learned the game.
As for SP vs MP, it really depends on what you want to do. Playing with other people and joining clans is a lot of fun, but the storyline is great too.
I would reccomend playing the storyline through once before you play extensively online. That way, you can have more experience when you face other people. When you are ready to give MP a serious try, go to the Clans Forum to look at some of the avaliable clans. It definatly makes MP more fun!
Again, enjoy the game and the guide!

Actually you can go anywhere in a starlifer . I'm a so-so pilot and I still can get around. When ever I start a new char I go thru sig 13 for wrecks then to sig 19 , Beta, Alpha , Tau then drop in on Unkown

Personally, I don't see the point in clans, you can just form an unsaid "clan" with a couple of people on a server by using the group function. But, if you like the whole experience of being in a clan, check out the Clan forum and choose one that appeals to you. There's no shortage

You want a clan where you can earn how you like and basically do what you fancy? You need a mercenary clan IMO. For example, MINE .

The Mercenary Navy has been going for a little over a year now (just had 1st birthday) and we're always on the lookout for new pilots.

Head over to our site (link in my sig) and take a look around, register on the forums whilst you're there.

Go to http://www.gamefaqs.com and look up freelancer. check the faqs. they are really good. they have some that will walk you thru single player missions. others will tell you almsot anything about bribing with other factions, bases, wreck and jumphole locations, ship info, and commodity info. Be warned though that this may spoil a lot of things for you. but if you want to learn everything about freelancer fast check it out.

i personally like multiplayer better because i have a lan at my house and i can play with friends. its best to play thru single player first though. and
just by playing thru single player you will learn a lot. Good luck.

One thing you can do are the controls. Personally, the default controls are useless to me.

I changed acceleration and deacceleration to the mouse wheel. made w thrust, and s reverse thrust. cruise is still shift-w. torpedo is space bar. cd is e. mine is shift-e. missile is q. engine kill is x. tractor beam functions and view change functions are switched (v and b).
