Torpedos

Do torpedos really serve a porpose?
You don't need them when taking down a base in a job.

Does any one on the forums use torpedos for something in the un-moded universe?

I used them tons during the campaign and for a short while afterwards. They do become quite useless when your guns can rip apart any stationary object in two seconds though. Your better off using that hard-point for a cruise disruptor then.(which I plan on doing once I get back to using my Sabre)

Yeah, but what are Cruise Disrupters good for? I never used them for anything,
before or after the story.

i assume you used your torps for battle ships in the story right?

you need to get a ship that can hold both a cruise dissrupter and a torp. Lets say you are on a mission, where you have to kill this guy. You get to where he is, and before you get a chance he turns on his cruise engiens. He is out of range before you can land one shot on him, but if you use a cruise disrupter, he cant flee. Then use one Sunslayer, it goes up his ass, and you make money instantly, unless it is a capture prisioner mission, then just tractor him up and go where you need to go. So YES. torps do serve a porpuse

killa, i know in missions the objective normally tells you to not folow him and just runs away. but eventully he stops, and when you have a titen that is outfited with very powerfull wepones(naturally :-) you can kill him instantly.

I see CD only good for getting othey players in MP.

But using a Cruise Disruptor allows you to kill him on the spot, saving you from following him or fighting his goons. Quite useful if you ask me.

I find toprs to be quite useful. However, I have not found Sunslayer to be much more effective even though specs indicate otherwise.
One tactic that seems useful is when going head on, especially against several, is when in range begin firing guns & launching torps. This often takes out at least one and damages others. This can be quite handy on an assassinate mission since intended target has little chance to run. And in a lesser ship this tactic can be helpful.
I have used this to take out 3/4 ships on a first run.
If you have a good homing missile like the Firestorm it can be even more effective than torps. If mounting a pair & launching them at the right time the target has little chance.
Using these tactics can mitigate the need for disruptors.

Use the torpedos for slow moving objects like stations, battleships, gunboats, etc.... Cruise Disruptors are not used by me at all. Even if i buy one, i forget to fire one, i prefer to kill before my prey escapes

Here's a strategy for torpedo's, Ahem: When engaged in a dogfight, torpedo's can be useful. Attack the enemy until his shields are down. Once accomplishing that task, kill the engines, do a 360 degree rotation, and fire torpedo's as the enemy procedes toward you. Then watch his ship rip apart

Thanks for the replies all,

CD: Although maybe there usefull in the beging, when you don't have such a power full ship. There also good for getting a human player in MP. But as I said before, when you have a titan (yes I know it doesn't look so good, but face it, it is most powerful ship in the game, un-moded) that has very powerfull guns. You can take out any NPC (by the way, I know what these letters imply, but what do they stand for?) enemie quite fast. Infact there dead ducks while starting their cruise engines to run away.

Torps: Well, torps may be good for battleships and gunboats in the story. But afterwards I see them quite useless. I can rip apart any mission base in seconds with my mounted guns.

It would be great if DA would have battleship and gunboat encouters in freeplay. And the abilitie to take out bases. Man! You could destroy the whole unvivers!

Cruise Disruptors are very versatile weapons. Their primary purpose is of course to disrupt a cruise engine. However, hornets are do damage to hull if shield is down. All cruise disruptors can destroy torps and missiles. If the torp/missile is close enough to your enemy, it's explosion can damamge your enemy. And even more importantly, cruise disruptors will reactivate an engine with engine kill. If your opponent (in duels, etc.) uses engine kill, cruise disruptors will might make him slow down for a bit.

Torps are not as useful. Starkillers will make the length of any mission shorter while costing only a few hundred credits per torp. I'd rather have a hornet for dueling but starkillers could surprise your enemy if fired right. Sunslayers are worthless.

I "don't like" cruise disruptors and I never have one on my ship.
If you want to get somewhere fast and some pirates/criminals shoot you out of cruise speed it takes some minutes extra (fighting).

Where can I find servers to play Freelancer over Internet ?

I find missiles and mines a better ally than torps. Torps cost a lot and often overkill, aside from being fairly sluggish. Cruise disruptors can prove useful in speeding missions up and piracy raids on the internet. Mines can shake goons off your tail and can provide for some interesting tactics. Using twin neutralizer missiles to take down an enemy's shield and then mopping them up with heavy guns is also a useful tactic.
