Is this true of Freelancer? (copied from the SL forum)

And I quote...

"In Freelancer there is no such thing as a 'dogfight', it's just a series of head-to-head passes whilst firing at the other space craft. The joy of getting on an enemy space crafts six o'clock, and twisting and burning as he tries to shake you is lost in Freelancer."

Agree/Disagree?

Whoever wrote that hasn't played the game! You have to stick with one enemy at a time and chew them up. Go head to head -- unless you are well past the story line game and have the highest level guns -- and you will never eliminate anybody.

Head-to-head in this context means they way combat is carried out, i.e. head-on passes at each other. Most sims involve getting on the enemies 6 and staying there... Can you do this in Freelancer for 90% of the fight? I can't.

Actually, these are just encounters because there are so few ships. By the end of WWI, where "dogfight" was coined, many didn't consider it a full dogfight unless 80 aircraft were involved. The only true dogfights in the game are in the storyline, for example;

***Massive spoilers follow, please skip the next section if you don't want the SP experience totally ruined for you***

when Walker and his escorts help you take on the Navy, when you have to bust out of Alaska, when you and the Order take out nomads.

***We now resume the post in progress***

Becuase there are dozens of ships out there all firing at each other, it is a true dogfight. Me coming across a bounty hunter in some god forsaken corner of Liberty and blasting him to kingdom come is just a skirmish. --- VH16

Obviously this guy hasn't played the game for more than 2 minutes. The only time I get into a head-on pass with a ship is when I first encounter them. After that it's a game of cat-and-mouse, with both fighters trying to become the cat.

The Oxford English Dictionary states: dogfight [n informal. A fight between [usually two aircraft. So I think any form of aerial combat could be counted as such if you want. Sorry VH, I felt inadequate not being able to dogfight after my SP campaign..............

Dunno why you think it's obvious that the guy hasn't played it for more than 2 minutes. I could say the same about you, but seeing as I don't have any hard evidence to support the statement, then I wont.

My experience of dogfighting in Freelancer is that you do a head-on pass (as does the other ship), you kill engine, turn around, hit the thruster and do another head-on pass (as does the other ship), and then continue to repeat the above until one of you dies.

In Freelancer, it's just a series of head-on passes as I described in the previous paragraph, this I believe is due to the limitations of using mouse control instead of a Joystick.

If you had ever played Starlancer or any other similar combat space sim or even flight sim, then you would get on the enemies tail (enemies 6 o'clock) and you would stay there shooting while the enemy tried to shake you and escape with his best moves. I guess you need a Joystick to do this.

Perhaps I'm not understanding your post correctly, if so, could you please elaborate and explain to how you actually fight, when in a dogfight in Freelancer, by that I mean can you stick like glue to an enemies tail whilst using a mouse, or is it just series of head-on passes?
