Probably a border dispute. That, and Rhineland has a thing against Kusari for some reason, and many GMG are of Kusari decent. That, and Rheinland's an expansionist and industrial house, the gas fields of the sigma systems were just to good to pass off. --- VH16

Well, the war lasted 80 years, was fought between Rheinland and the GMG, the GMG won, end of story. Most of the battles, all that I know of, took place in sigma-13. I don't remember any wrecks anywhere else.

Maybe you played through without paying attention to the rumours and messages. Seems a large civilian company pushed Rheinland into a confrontation with the GMG over some stretches of fuel rich space. Rheinland should have been able to win it, but the GMG knew the turf much better. Eventually, the GMG lured the Rheinland fleet into the gas fields, where those explosions more or less blew the fleet to bits for them. Thereafter, the Rheinland military was sort of in disgrace after being beaten the way they were.

Odd thing about cruisers and battleships in FL. They can easily be taken out by ordinary fighters. So what's the point of having capital ships then???

Another odd thing -- how come the old Imperial Navy had more powerful guns than the new Republican Navy?

The old Rheinland fleets were better equiped because they were well funded. They're a bit like the Russians. Once the Soviet millitary was a well funded well oiled feared millitary machine. Now, after an embarassing post soviet decade, the Russain millitary can barely keep track of its nukes, much less properly equip its fighing force. With the fleet destroyed, so goes the funding for Rheinland weapons. Also, anyone think that Synth foods could be behind it? They goud Rhineland into war. When Rhineland looses, cripling treaties (a la Versilles) give Synth VERY lucrative contracts in Rhienland space (well, more like them forced down Rheinland's throats rather than "give". --- VH16
