What are your favorite things about Freelancer?

Please list some of your favorite things about FL. Let's just say that I live in Austin, TX (home of DA) and I know some people in the game industry that may or may not be working on a game of similar concept for various platforms, and wanted to hear some input from the active FL community....

I'll start: I love the mod-ability

Post Thu Apr 01, 2004 6:49 am

I'm sure many of the responses my be length, I'll try to keep mine brief.

I love the open-endedness of Freelancer; the fact that I can do pretty much whatever I want. A newer game of this genre would do well to provide even more options to the player.

I also love exploring the universe. Knowing that there is a vast, unique galaxy out there to explore makes the game fun to play every time. Something new to find makes sure the game nevers gets old.

Those are my 2 cents.

What sort of favourite things ?

IMHO; Its realism-fantasy game like I'm myself really going far away to another system. I fell like I was inside the cockpit & travel ver very far, alone.. like the lone ranger

Crosshair Alliance

The open-endedness is my favorite thing too. In my mind the story is nice, but reall an afterthought for the most part. I'm not really into the trading thing, but Ilike messing around with what I get from just killing folks and trying to turn a profit on it.

I think the game also gives a real good sense of the void of space and the realism it brings just cruising around in nothingness. The mechanics may be a bit arcadey for some, but it's just the right amouint of realism for me without the micromanangement.

The greatest thing about Freelancer is not just the open-endedness, which is of course a great thing, but the fact that in the multiplayer you can go around doing whatever you want with whoever you find online. It's great to just wander around in a group of four decked out Sabres or Eagles, doing whatever you want because hardly anyone can stop you

The sheer size and variedness of it.
I also love the arcadey controls.
And the ships.
And the community.
And the Mods.
I also think the graphics are very good, considering I run on GeForce 2 with max settings and no slowdown.

The fact that it's actually STABLE. Too many games are coming out rushed these days, FL is one of the most stable games I've played in a LONG time. I gues MS CAN do something right once in a while.

All my responses are about MP because I feel SP was too short and should only be used as a learning process for MP.

- I like to see modding but only if they can be stable and well-supported. FL has no info from DA about how to mod.
- I do like the open-ended play as it leads to player interaction. That's where the real fun is.
- I, too, like the vastness of space as portaited in the game. Just enough to not be bored.
- I like the fact when you do something there are subtle and not so subtle interactions in the game. I.E. Take out neutral Xenos and they become instantly hostile yet your rep with other factions become a little more friendly.

While I am not trying to be negative I wouldn't say from the server side FL is fully stable. I also don't think the flying interface should be so limited to the mouse only.

I love the explosions! I also liked the story. I also like the fact that when you finish the story missions, the game doesn't end until you want it to. Exploration is also a factor.

Finally, the story gets mentioned! The story line does make you want to keep playing to find out what will happen next. And the fact that the game doesn't just end after SP is indeed a plus. Too many games end after the last mission -- and they get erased from the HD with the game put back into the box. Or else there is no point in going on after the story line ends. (Remember Privateer II? You have found out that you are the heir to the criminal gangs. Problems is ... they sort of forget it and all attack you anyway. Huh?)

It would be a terrible waste of the beautiful FL universe, if no other games use it. It is just begging for sequels or even seperate story lines within the same universe.

No ones mentioned the cut scenes either. Compared to a few other games (I wont mention any in particular, cough cough) the cut scenes are great. It adds to the story and ties everything together.

The fact that you can go and become so many different "classes", as in a bounty hunter, miner, pirate, etc... You dont just have to be the one type of person that they wanted you to be.

I certainly enjoy the immersion that I get from the game. I can spend what seems very little time, only to find out hours have past. The stability of this game is excellent. The open-endedness, the variety of ships, and the ability to do what ya want. I think the graphics are gorgeous. I really enjoy the simplicity of the controls and user-friendly UI. Even though there are some outstanding mods out there (although I don't really see how WW2 aircraft fit in a space game) the game's great just out of the box.

I don't mean to "gush" but there is a big WOW factor in this game.

Oh the pain....the pain.
