Turret Mode! Turret Mode!

Oh my God!!! It absolutely rocks!!!

What a fantastic game - I haven't been this addicted to a game since Deus Ex.

I'd done the SP game mostly in cockpit view, 1st person, as a straight shooter with just enough trading to be comfortably off in fighters and gear, and I was starting to get into the SP "aftergame". I'd tooled around in the Anubis, making a few lucrative trade runs, levelled up to 26, done the Xeno thing so most nasties were neutral. I was beginning to get a bit bored, so I decided to explore more of the possibilities of the game and do some serious trading, so I got the Dromedary at Mactan, and since I realised I'd now have to, I started exploring turret mode.

Words fail ... the feeling of immersion when you've got an all-round view is amazing, you really get a sense of SPACE all around you, and suddenly the game opens up to a whole new level, like being in a film.

1st person view is still great sometimes, but one of the problems with it is that the feel of the game can tend to become a bit 2-d, where you're just trying to get the circle round a red cursor on a flat screen. But turret mode really makes you feel like you're in a film, really out there IN space, with a sense of what's going on all around. Before, when I'd been thinking about how the plane of the game was a bit horizontally flat, I'd thought it would be difficult to implement more 3-dness (up/down), but now I see that it could be done, even 3-d maps could be understood, when you have a sense of space around you like this.

I'm 44 years old and this game has really re-awakened my old childhood love of space and s-f and all the rest of it. It shows that true 3-d space sim is possible. I know there's not as much complexity as some would like, but that will surely improve with the next FL game, which I'm now very much looking forward to.

Anyway, please excuse my ejaculations :-) As you were ...

Indeed.

Welcome to TLR, it's not easy to leave

What once was FL2, and now is ... *hmm what is it?* (Tempest Studios)

Yes the SP campaign is very nice isn't it? I really can't describe how the story is the best story of any game I ever played in a very long long time... The intrigue, the fast pace, the adrenaline rush, the urgency, and the romance! It keeps you guessing all the time.

The back ground images are simply fabulous.

Tell you what else though graphic wise in not on par with X2 I have discovered that FL more than make that up through polish. X2 runs at around 10 fps in combat scenes... that's what I'd call unplayable...

Additionally if you ever play that kind of game you would truely appreciate the interface design in FL. The simplicity and the intuitiveness of the GUI is just awesome, great, wonderful!

If you're starting to get bored grab up some of the mods around here that should extend the game's replay value quite a bit.

And lastly welcome to TLR

Always good to see another person impressed by FL

Also, in addition to what Visconti said - if none of the mods here take your fancy you can make your own - that's half the beauty of it all

Greetings, GG. Nice to have another old fart for company.

p.s. I haven't done the game in a freighter. Looks like something to do now!

Freighters can be quite powerful because of the turrets they have, meaning they can cover themselves from any angle (to make up for their maneuverability)

I love turret mode when I'm in a freighter. Go slow, enemies all over the place, taking them out wherever they are... great fun. Though I'm a dog-fight specialist usually, I can still appreciate the turretiness

Some people think that Turret Mode doesn't make up for the Freighter's low maneuverability, but tell that to the 500 Xeno Starfliers and Startrackers I just wasted in my Humpback =).

Sometimes, when I'm in a freighter, I'll join a formation with a patrol, go into turret mode, and blast like crazy at whatever enemies come our way.

Whenever I do a long cruise-trip across an area (especially one that doesn't involve trade lanes), I use the turret mode to check out the backgrounds (pretty), as well as looking out for interesting anomalies/bases/enemies.

One of the downfalls of turret mode is the inability to steer. That's why freighters should be controlled by two players, a pilot and a co-pilot/gunner.

That would be amazing if you could do it - a freighter evading shots while spraying out turret fire in all directions. Think of the possibilities...

Re. steering in turret mode - I think it could actually be implemented if it was possible to bind the the Q and E keys to turn left and right. But of course then you'd lose the hotkeys for missiles and mines. (You could shift the WASD "set" down so it was SZXC, then you'd have A and D as turn left and right, something like that.) But there doesn't seem to be any key possibilties for turn left and right, and I haven't seen a way of changing key bindings anyway.

Does anyone remember that vastly underrated game from Looking Glass, Terra Nova? In that game you aimed the gun with your mouse but used an expansion of the WASD keys to steer yourself - it was great, you could be walking in one direction, shooting in another.

Ahhh yes Terra Nova, a classic in its own right.
