I remember they killed off Maniac in one game, but realised that was a bad move. He was "resurrected" in later games and they sort of forgot that he'd ever "died"!

You can find some of the Wing Commander games on line. Just Google. Of course, the graphics will look pretty crude nowadays. The later games are quite all right though on today's computers. A feature I liked was that the way you played influenced the game. If you were doing badly, the enemy was driving your forces back and beating the **** out of you. If you did well, you had them on the run. In FL, you complete an SP mission or fail. Nothing in between.
