Says who FL was a poor seller?

Ah I'm a new guy here, but I have heard a lot of negative posts about poor FL sales. There are also a lot of people claiming that there're very few articles that mention FL. Not true! Chk out this quote from gamespy x2 review:

Overall, though, X2 could turn out to be one of the truly great space sims, ready to take its place among the Wing Commanders,Freelancers , and Independence Wars of the genre. The visuals alone may well carry this game to greatness. If the gameplay turns out to be a strong as seems to be headed, X2 may even be the long-awaited successor to the Elite throne.

Yah, FL was a big seller, despite its lack of advertising. And the only problem is that MS won't admit that it did well.

You'd think there was some kind of resurgence in FL. On my server alone we have 20-30 new characters (probably half that amount new players) a day for the last month.

X2 focuses more on stragety and economics simulator then a wing-commander aspects itself.

Those games are pretty old...but if it's so popular, why hasn't MS or DA said anything about an X-Pack or a sequel?

Post Thu Feb 26, 2004 12:48 pm

I started a thread "Why Freelancer was not a big seller." I was promptly corrected. I made some assumptions partly based on my own observations of how fast the games shelf price dropped and where it is now. It appears I was wrong about that. The rest of the post, however, is an interesting read, with some well thought out debates. If I could have renamed the post shortly after I'd put it up I would have. I'm glad it's a bigger seller than I originally thought. It is pretty amazing how many independent servers are out running FL and how many folks are playing it still. Some newer games wish they had the fan base of FL, and if Micro Soft doesn't want to take note, it's their loss.

As I said:- "the only problem is that MS won't admit that it did well."

MS don't have that excuse for not bringing out an expansion!

Maybe they're just biding their time until they have something impressive to show?

And I still wish there was some sort of revenue chart with FL. "Top Five of 2003" is impressive, but vague.

Give a summary of total sold games worlwide, not an odd week. It seems every game that's atleast half good gets to be in the top 5 list for a week, or two...

I'm not saying Freelancer was a gad game, just that a weekly sales chart doesn't mean a crap.

Post Fri Feb 27, 2004 5:28 pm

As best as I can tell, FL was on the Top 10 bestseller charts for about 2 months, at least for the US. I can only imagine it was comparable for other regions.

Frankly, I can't help but think that this wasn't nearly enough to recoup development costs. I think that's why we haven't heard any talk of expansion packs or sequels just yet. Microsoft is probably thinking to themselves, "No, the day of the big space sim really is over." It's too bad: if DA had just gotten most everything right, I'm pretty sure FL would've been a huge seller. There's just a few too many flaws to guarantee that FL would've been appreciated beyond us nostalgic space sim fans.
