Start of small and work your way up.
Start off with a few ships like the viper (i love that ship) they can be quite fun.
Then some battleship encouter mods, these can be really fun, blast a battle ship there, shoot a ship there, wham wham, u get the picture.
Get a few more systems, fun to explore and fun to distory, now your getting a side of the game you havent seen before.
Work your way up the mods and then propear for total war!
