Playing without the storyline

I've downloaded the Open SP mod, that basically get's rid of the story line, is it still possible to enjoy the game this way? I want to play like Frontier First Encounters, just flying around doing my thing, but is it possible to still have things happen this way? Like can you become a pirate, or annoy one group of people and do jobs for another etc?

Orillion: So trent, will you help us with the mission?

Trent: Sure, as long as I'm not shot at, knocked out, held at gunpoint, electrocuted, skewered alive by giant alien shapeshifters, have to dive out windows, or fight off spindly nomad incubi.

But things will happen? I won't just be floating around doing nothing?

I think it'll be kind of like playing alone on a multiplayer server. You could do things such as:

* perform randomly-generated missions for various factions
* ship cargo for profit
* mine
* explore the star systems (hint: look at patrol paths on F6 to find obvious places to go); salvage wrecks; find jump holes
* pillage cargo from transports

But the single player campaign is pretty interesting IMHO, so I would recommend playing it if you haven't already. After you play through the campaign, you can still play but then there's no more scripted storyline but you can do anything.

If you're playing with a MOD, then Open SP can be quite interesting, but unmodded (xkluding Open SP) I find Open SP to be quite dull.

OK, what mods would you reccomend to go with it?

You should use Evolutions. I don't think it actually works with opensp, but it's still a kick-ass mod.

I'm making record time!
If only I had someplace to be...

I have a question. What does IMHO stand for?

And to answer your question Mike, openSP is really good as it is. Although I would recommend Victors Enchancement Mod 1.62. It starts you out as neutral to all factions, so you can trade freely, then get a good ship and join your favorite pirate group. I play it, I usually work for the junkers since they remain kind of neutral to everyone but are still criminals.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

In my humble opinion. I think. Probably.
