If you're near a tradelane, they're the best thing around for discouraging pursuit. You can drop a mine just as you're about to enter- if it is well timed, you should go speeding away and the mine will disrupt the lane behind you, preventing anyone from following you.
When using them for direct combat, note that like any blast weapon, they work best after the enemy's shields are depleted. Also, make sure that you can get a hit before dropping, or it isn't worth trying- mines tend to be more expensive than missiles of the same damage rating.
When doing a head on pass, release slightly BEFORE you get to your target, not slightly after- remember, if you are past the enemy already, so is your mine launcher, and mines are not fast projectiles (an enemy going 200 is not going to be caught by a mine doing 80). Hit your mine key about when your target passes your nose and you should score a hit, as the enemy will not have time to evade the mine you've dropped on their face.
If successful, you should hear the mine detonate behind you. The first few times, you may want to hit V after you pass your target to see if you dropped too soon or too late, so you can adjust accordingly.
