SP outside the story line

As a total newbie to Freelancer I am currently playing it through the first time in straight 'vanilla' mode. But I'm looking forward to puttering around in the Lancerverse with out the constant interuptions from Junki to come help save the universe. And looking forward to trying out some of the cool mods.

Just wondering about how you manage to play outside the story line. Firstly, you start in the New York system without the ability to even leave the system until as part of the story you get the 'codes' and then these are only for three other systems. In the story, you are not acually free to travel until after you have spent hours and hours playing the story line and then rebel and run with Juni and King - at which point Libery is after you. How do you get to just play in the Lancerverse, preferably without Libery chasing you?

Also in just a general generic way, once you are playing on your own do some of the events from the story line happen around you or not?

Not looking for any spoilers, just some general info (other than how you break free from the story line).

Play through the storyline first, and you'll be happy that you did. Otherwise you could just play on multiplayer, but you would have to start from stratch.

Thanks for the fast reply.

I've been looking through the many downloads and look forward to exploring them.

However, my question was not about the various downloads, but rather how does one break out of the lock-step of the scriped story line?

Unfortunately, the "newbe questions' link doesn't work and in the Forum introductioin and FAQ it is stated "Due to perfomance issue, you can not currently search!" so the option of searching seems to be out - hence my question.

Any hints would be appreciated.

I completely agree with you Black Leader - I'm definately going to put the time in with the stock story line - I'm having a blast. I just got to thinking about how to break free for later, prob after installing one of the interesting mods.

Right now I'm totally stalled at M06, with Bubba Hovis. I seem to be one of those people who for hardware or genetic reasons just ain't no ring racer. I did find a cool post on doing a bit of very minor hacking to just get past the silly race, but the M06.ini file seems to be too corrupt for an ini editor to open, yet it plays find - weird.

You can take your time about responding to Juni's messages. She'll wait for you. So you can explore around, make money, buy better equipment etc while you are playing the SP game. Then when you feel like it, go see what Juni wants you to do. (This doesn't work near the end though.)

On that Hovis race, don't let him get the jump on you. Once he gets a lead, you've had it ... even by the first ring. There's a knack to beating him. At first, I had a terrible time. But now it seems so easy that it is ridiculous. Just keep at it.
Go like aitch and ignore him.

Thanks for the info. I have been occasionally blowing Juni off until I have a better ship and weapons, but I worry about letting it go too long. 'Couse showing up for the party under-gun ain't good either.

Yeah, there's no time limit on responding to Juni's hails. As you progress farther in the game, there will be more opportunities to explore and more space will be open to you. Also, the assets needed to trigger Juni's call increase, so you'll naturally be spending more time free to do what you want.

Just a quick note (sorry if it's technically a "spoiler": You can beat Hovis even if he gets a lead on you. Just keep it close.

That's not a spoiler - that's encouragement!

I problem is prob me, at a certain point I lose orientation and lose track of the circuit of rings. I finally hacked the .ini file just to get past the race and move on.

That's because the original M06.ini isn't decompiled. Thus unreadable be default.

Now that is a very interesting response. I'm a total newbee at this, but FL is such fun that you guys are inspiring me to concider putzing with the game a bit myself, so I'm interested in understanding what is going on.

I used the BWS INI Viewer - which also lets you edit. I was able to successfully load various other non-FL .ini files, not no M06.ini file. The M06.ini files I tried were 1) a copy directly off the CD
2) the original m06.ini file that existed in the directory of the game
3) the same file as 2 after I had used BINI to uncompress it
Once I switiched to Tinyfish INI Editor, I had no problem with any of the three versions, was able to make the necessary change and move on.

With BWS INI Viewer is was getting a "Run-Time Error" message and the program would crash to desktop.

With a generic INI Editor I was getting a "Corrupt File - unable to open" message.

All very strange. My conclusion - I REALLY like Tinyfish INI Editor!!

Those rings are actually pilfered from an old Star Wars game from around 10 years ago. They are part of the training level for that game. Forget which one it is. If you're familiar with that game, the rings are easy. If not, it can be a little tricky the first couple of times. Miss one ring and you've had it.

You need the BINI Decompresser. Noticed how the first four character are BINI? That's because it was encrypted in the BINI algorothrim.

Just go on, follow the rings, don't miss anyone and you'll be fine. As others already have said, Dexter will do some weird mistake and miss a ring. Then it's much easier to win

If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is nothing for you.

You should download Chips OpenSp mod. You get to completely ignore the sp
missions. Lots of other cool stuff on it.
