What NPC stands for?

What is NPC? I guess it's a short form of something

Navy, police, ... what?
Who or what it is? What does he/she/it do, where does it go or not? What they
are suppose to do and what not? Well, stupid questions, but I saw a variable
'npc_locked_gate' in FL file, so if I new what a NPC is, I might know someting
more about that variable. Are NPCs those who give you the jobs How does that fit
in that variable name... man, this post will stay unanswerd for sure...

Non-Player Characters. In SP, it's everyone who's not Trent. In MP, it's everyone who's not a real human player.

Just in case, SP=single player, MP=multiplayer

Actually the above answer is not correct. NPC is Natural Pure Cardamine. The only way to get the full and complete ectasy it offers. Not weakened by some yo-yo Junker or Rogue trying to stretch what they got for a few more creds.

The more I think about it, the more I'm sure they're characters.
And the variable would mean which gates are locked for NPC. If they are
in some system, they have access only to some gates/holes. It must be that!

NPC=Non-Player Character
they are computer controled ships, junk, stars, planets, and other models that the user or users have no control over.
