Question ... Don''t Shoot !!!

OK, I just bought FL, loaded and thought I was going to use my Brand new MSFF2 Joystick ( there's that word again ). And lo and behold it's not supported ( and it's even an MS product. Initial Big Bummer, but I think to myself, there must be a reason. So, all you Space Jock's out ther convince me the mouse is the way to go. And while you are at it, does an optical mouse "Roar" or can I use the standard old fashioned mouse that came with the Box. Great pity and understanding Please ...

Bummer dude! yeah, FL does not support joystick. I can try and convince you in many ways, but the only real convincing can come only from you (stop me when I have blurted out too many Yoda wisdom gems). Just try it. While I have met many who are disappointed for the lack of joystick, I have yet met anyone who hated FL's mouse control. It's so natural and sleek that you'll forget joystick in no time.

I prefeer the mouse than the joystick.

same here. The combat system is perfectly balanced to the mouse, and accurately recreates the need for a "lead" on your traget, whereas a joystick control system would be less accurate, and would drag the game down, IMO. besides, it'd be harder to control all those menus with a joystick.

I feel the greatest advantage of an optical mouse is the ability to report mouse movement regardless of the surface. Well compare it to a rollerball mouse, especially one that gets gummed up with HOURS and HOURS of FL!

I find the transition between mouse flight mode and click&hold mouse flight mode slow to enable and disable when I need to use the mouse as a mouse! For example I need to disable my Nomad blasters in a duel (gotta give Falcon's a chance when you're in an Eagle!) and I have to toggle flight modes with the space key. If I forget I fly all over tarnation as I "attempt" to regain control then use my mouse like a mouse. Would like to see that transition speeded up a bit.

As for the leading the target part, I disagree except for the menu control. FL ships fly like airplanes, let's face facts. I have never flew a plane (but did tons of hours in Flight Simulator) but no plane in the entire world since the beginning of mankind used a mouse. How many used a joystick or a variation of a joystick? I rest my case.

Welcome to the forums. I love the mouse control and you probebly will to when you get used to it.

Didn't someone find a way to substitute the joystick for the mouse?
I'm no techie, so I have no idea how, but I remember reading it in a topic.

An ideal system would let you use the joystick for flying, and the mouse for aiming...and it would have a roll feature. Gotta have roll.

Nukelt: Roll is good, also a turning thingy wich keeps you leveled.

Viper: I know there's someone who got a gamepad to work.

Anyway, I love the mouse-control. Partly because I suck at joystick-controls

Edit: Damn spelling.

If you have a problem with the ship reacting too fast, in SP you can edit your ship in this area.

steering_torque = 18000.000000, 18000.000000, 58000.000000
angular_drag = 15000.000000, 15000.000000, 35000.000000
rotation_inertia = 2800.000000, 2800.000000, 1000.000000

To slow down the "oversteering" effect and make it easyer to stay locked on the enemy ship..

Yo,
I had the same problem (And Joystick) when first downloaded freelancer. And I was pretty Pissed myself but i quickly got used to using the mouse, and now i wont play game with anything else. (Not that i can. Just wanted that Dramatic Scene)

Sooo to sum it all up JUST STICK TO THE MOUSE.

I have an optical trackball mouse and the control is so much better than a joystick in FL it's amazing!
PS , does anyone know of any online walkthroughs or tactics articles for FL ?
I'm already addicted to FL and all I've played so far is the demo!
