Just got the game!

Hiya everyone, first off I just wanted to say hello! I finally decided to purchase FL the other day, I love it I've never been so hooked on a game in a long, long time.

Single player is really fun, and I think after that I will dive into an mp server - I have a few questions though.

I had tried to join an mp server the other day to test out what it was like. I joined a server that I had an 11 ping too (I'm assuming I live REALLY near it..hehe..) - anyways, upon joining everything was sweet. I picked a kill mission and headed out. To my amazment, the enemies were near IMPOSSIBLE to hit. They had some kinda super jittery spastastic engine drives or something. Then, while trying to hit these enemies, I would get the yellow and red lag indicator for upwards of 10 minutes. This happened on every server I joined. What gives? Is MP really like this? I hope I'm doing something wrong..every time I tried to kill the easiest of enemies it was like a 20 minute jitter lag fest.

Also, I'm on a 2mb business cable plan..hope that helps

I'll check back soon! See ya in FL!

11 Ping is a glitch.
Try another server. Even people with 56K dont get teh lag effect.
The enemies you encountered jumped around because fo the lag. basicly your computer sees the ship at the point it was then, and then 2 seconds later. It appears that they jump, but they are really not. Anyway Try another server. You dont want to get me started on protocol stuff...

Anyway. Welcome home...

People play MP on 56k? My gosh, I must be missing summit... the reason I don't mp is because my connection is just 56k. What sort of lag do you get?

As a freelancer one encounters some strange stuff - in the the end, however, you always remain the strangest thing you are ware of.

@Baldur: Welcome and stick around

Lag has several reason:

1. Mods. Check the server info to see what mod you need if you need a mod at all.
2. Cheaters. They usually use just mods wich aren't alowed by the serverrules, or they have manually modified the FL files. Usually people change the gun and ship stats up to uber-class stuff. Some even use the banned and forbidden cllll...clllllooo... *rasp* *gurgle* sorry I can't hardly say it, *cough* cloack *cough* *rasp* *gurgle* Yech.
3. Hackers. Plain and simple they screw with the server.

Other reasons besides lag for jittering ships and stuff:

1. Connection. Well, 2Mbit does the job, but if you have a lot of background programs running wich take up bandwith, it might slow you down. Even if you have such a connection as you do. Some programs just eat up whatever bandwith you own.
2. Grafix card. The grafixcard might be the problem if it's one of the older ones or a card with low ram memory (below 64M it delays the gameplay. Especially during heavy grafic prosssecing (explosions, lot of gunfire) you comp reacts slow.
3. Other comp specs. But somehow I feal that with your connection you've got a good enough comp.

If I didn't strike gold with this, and I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case, I sugest you pay a visit to the Technical Isues forum where most techheads wander around waiting for guys like you.
or wait here until they get here

Have fun!

Edit: Damn spelling.

It's the sand in the clock wich stops the time... or was it... D'oh, I need to study harder on this time control thing.

2mb is a great connection......however it's a great connection if it's a personal connection ......you said it was a business line, no telling whats pumping through, right?

Might be your co-workers are sucking your bandwidth up......

May I suggest some possible courses of action with which to deal with such a problem? OKAY!!!!

One thing I've learned over the years about people....they really enjoy their knee-caps. If you threaten to take away someone's knee-caps, they will most likely just give you what you want, no one likes to be Mr. Mopey No-knees.

One thing I've learned about computer monitors is that they don't get along with bullets. So just go ahead and let a few bullets gang up on each of your co-worker's monitors.......if they can't see their work, they can't work! Bandwidth restored!!!

alright I'll stop now..........

Good?....Bad?......I'm the guy with the gun.

Maybe it was a really crappy server?
I used to play on Elite (22 ping) and I sometimes got lag, but it rarely (very rarely) happened.

Post Fri Jan 16, 2004 5:43 am

Ive had that bug before. Never thought that it was because of the ping.
Anyway: Welcome to TLR

Also ther r a lot of great mods for Sp on this site I usually play those because of the ship & weapon packs
have been havin problums with wto 1.1

be shure that u down load the freelancer mod manger its a must have
2 make the mods work the 1,2 works real well the 1.2bata.9 seemes to keep u from mixin the mods together were the 1.2 would let u mix more.
