Freelancer and Stars!

Playing Freelancer reminded me of a game named Stars! - a turn-based interstellar strategy that i've played a long ago, it has alot of simillar things and the same mood of exploration, and most important it has multiplayer that can be played over e-mail, modem, LAN, or hot-seat. For all those Freelancer fans i can recommend to try out the Stars!.

You sound like an advert! In fact, i think you are an advert. Please, at least be inventive.

I can hardly see any imilarity's between FL and Stars.

I don't see how any turnbased strategy can be compared to any Space-sim like Freelancer.

Looks nice, but a bit to basic for my likeing.

No, it's just an old good game, i can't describe it in other words, so that it wouldnt sound like advert :\. Just wanted other fans to know of it.

Daft Remarks: Basic? It's not basic. It's way more sophisticated than FL. When i played FL i remembered the Stars! cause it has the same mood, not strictly comparing game generes/graphics/etc..

LOL, Slider2k called Nickless by his root username. I thought it was funny.

Maybe from sort of stratedy side of things Stars might be a more involved game for the user, having to keep track of more things and such (I don't know, whatever you have to do for the game). But Freelancer is more sophisticated on a technical level for all the programming that is required for every little thing that happens in it.

I dont meant that FL is technically simplier, i meant that the Stars! is more wit consuming to play.

Looks super-cool to me. I'm a big civ fan and a space strategy game like this looks imcredibly cool. Shame theres no sp

Umm... The link didn't work.

And a game without SP?!? What is the world coming to?!?!

Ok, this is direct link to the game:
ftp://library.southern.edu/stars26b.zip
Free playable demo. Limited to technology level 10 but allows unlimited play turns. If you'll want to get registered version - ask the people on rec.games.computer.stars newsgroup.

There is SP - you can play against computer AI players, like in any other strategy game. But there's no scenario missions, and i dont think that the game is suffering because of it.

Stars! is much more akin to MOO. It is, however, a very enjoyable game, and worth checking out. Sure, it's quite a bit out of date now, but it's still a fun little addicting game.
