You can create a server on your own computer and it will show up on your LAN, but without an internet connection you cannot play with other people.

Yes you can play a multiplayer game by starting the flserver.exe program that comes on the cd and is installed by default.
Navigate to Start - All Programs - Microsoft Games - Freelancer - FLServer
You have to fill in server name, use any name you want. Number of players default is 16, don't worry about that.

Once the FLServer screen is up and running then you start Freelancer and choose multiplayer - lan and wait for the connection screen to come up then click on your server then click on connect and have a blast.

running a server and playing on the same machine you will potentially have a problem of it crashing for no apparent reason

you might be better looking for a mod to give you the same effect

what about the account ? cause the multiplayer ask for it?

The account is automatic...If I remember correctly it asks for the CD-Key which should be included with your FreeLancer game.

OpenSP gives the same effect as multiplayer on FL.

Just out of curriosity, why? The SP storyline doens't take that long, and is actually kind of cool. I fail to see the reason for playing MP by yourself (unless you like to post chat messages to the abyss). --- RR16

It's because some people (like myself) have a limited tolerance for certain tiresome creatures that frequent MP games.

Well, if it's just that, you can find yourself a deserted server. There's a lot of them around these days

Just discovered something. To play multi as SP as discribed above, there needs to be some kind of network structure available, be it loggod on internet or having a network card installed. Without either, the game can't find the server.

Start FL server - make it internet accessable -but then lock it with a password. Now go to MP - and find you server (should be first you see) - log on and play.

what kind of bandwidth does this take up??
i only ask cos my 512k cable connection is on 24/7 and i wouldn't mind making a small server.. ( i have lots of old pc bits lying around.. enough to stitch together a fairly decent pc for a few quid.. and could leave it connected to the net.. )

do i need a second copy of the game to run my second pc as just a server?

if i get into the mp seriously, then i might consider upgrading my cable connection to 2Mb..

you don't need the cd to run flserver. So only one cd is needed. Besides once the splash screen has passed u don't need the cd at all..
